Best Trees for Privacy

When you’re landscaping your yard, there are plenty of different reasons to choose trees. You might be looking for shade, or a bright pop of color in spring, or stunning foliage in fall. Many people choose trees for privacy. Unlike a privacy fence, trees and shrubs can shield your property from prying eyes without making it look like a fortress. Depending on your privacy needs, there are several different types of trees that could work well for you.

  • Evergreens provide year-round privacy. Because they hold onto their foliage all year, they’re a great option If you’re trying to block an unsightly view. There are so many different evergreens available, it’s easy to find the right one for you, whether you love live oaks or you’re more of a magnolia person. Ficus Indian Laurel trees are a great choice for privacy, because they’re fast growing and upright, with thick foliage that’s easy to prune and shape any way you like.
  • Deciduous trees don’t block winter sunlight. If you just want your yard to be a private place to play in the summer, and you want to keep as much light as possible in the winter, choose trees and shrubs that lose their leaves when it gets cold.
  • Create an outdoor room with ornamental trees. Crabapples, Ornamental Pears, or Ornamental Cherry trees, planted close together in a row, will provide privacy and may even attract birds and butterflies. If you’re looking for a complete, top to bottom privacy screen, consider planting these along a fence or with smaller shrubs planted under them.
  • Be smart about spacing. Consider the height you’ll need, and make sure you’ve given your trees enough room to grow to their full potential without encroaching on the neighbors’ property. Be cautious, too, about overhead power lines. Do your homework, so that you pick trees which will fit into your space without a lot of work on your part. Check the local ordinances, too, to make sure you’re staying within the established guidelines. Consider the width of mature trees, too, when deciding how far apart to plant them.
  • Get expert advice before you plant. Professionals can help you find the trees that are right for your climate and your location, so it always pays to talk to someone who knows about trees.
