Indian Laurel Columns (Ficus nitida columns)
One of the most ideal, and best, hedges you will find anywhere is our Indian Laurel Columns, sometimes known as the Ficus Nitida. We like to plant the Indian Laurel Columns to create a living wall of privacy- the ultimate Hollywood Hedge.
These evergreen trees can create an immediate privacy screen for your landscape and are the ideal choice to create a perfect yard with a classic look. They thrive in desert environments and are require little water, so they are well-suited for Southern California weather and landscapes. As a bonus, we love them for the massive amount of shade that they can add! Relax, unwind, have fun, and do it in the shade, without nosy neighbors getting into your business. Plant these Indian Laurel Columns in your yard and take in the dense green foliage that adds an impressive presence to your landscape!
Carolina Cherry (Prunus caroliniana ‘Compacta’)
The Carolina Cherry is native to the Texas area and does great when grown in the general southwestern region. This evergreen can be grown and used as a large shrub or as a small tree, whatever your needs might be. It grows easily in full sun exposure and requires little upkeep for it to grow and thrive. The Carolina Cherry has become a popular choice for its overall minimal maintenance, natural upright cone-like shape, and ability to tolerate heat, drought, and wind. These features make it great to be used as a weather barrier as well as for privacy purposes. The Carolina Cherry is a small to medium-sized evergreen with dark green, lustrous wavy foliage on brown thorn-less stems. They can also be easily sheared into a tall screen or sound barrier which make them a near-perfect option for many homes.
Podocarpus (Podocarpus gracilior)
This fern pine is such a show-off with its low maintenance, clean evergreen look, and ability to be grown into any size you need it to be! Homeowners can get creative with the shape of this evergreen wherever their imagination takes them, or they can leave it alone to reach tall heights and block out any unwanted views. One of the densest trees we offer at Moon Valley Nurseries, the Podocarpus thrives in full sun to partial shade and is a great option for any landscape. This evergreen needs a bit more water in the first year but cuts back once it is established in the soil.
Japanese Blueberry (Elaeocarpus decipiens)
The Japanese Blueberry tree is a visually appealing evergreen due to its thick, lush foliage and striking leaf color that lasts throughout the year. The green hues from the foliage provides a fantastic backdrop for contrasting flowers and shrubs. It thrives in full sun and can handle the cold extremely well. It has become one of Southern California’s most planted hedge variety and is an excellent choice for just about any landscape. Depending on how you choose to trim your trees, you can plant them to grow tall and upright and create a thick privacy wall that covers more than your fence does or make a fence completely made of Japanese Blueberry trees!
Italian Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens ‘Glauca’)
Plant these column evergreen trees in a row and create an attractive European-style property divider. You can plant these narrow fast-growing privacy hedges in your yard to bring the look of the Mediterranean to landscapes throughout the Southern California area. The Italian Cypress trees are a perfect option when you have limited space in your yard. Because of their tall and narrow growth habit, they can be used in almost any location you want them. As a bonus, they also create a useful windbreak to block high winds. Just line them up along the border of your property and create your own private space.
