Looking for a tree that will stay green all year round? Well, look no further! Moon Valley Nurseries has you covered. Evergreen trees keep their green leaves throughout the year, providing much needed color to our landscapes and adding value to our homes. Whether you need a tree for naturally cooling down your home, or privacy from neighbors, or blocking unwanted views and noises, or just for a nice shady spot for entertaining, we have what you need! We have been custom-growing trees for over 20 years locally at our acres of grow farms, making sure our trees will thrive in your landscape. There are many varieties of evergreens to choose from, here are some of our favorites:
Fruitless Olive (Olea europaea ‘Wilsonii’) – Moon Valley Nurseries grows Fruitless Olive strain that is certified truly fruitless. This drought tolerant evergreen tree is perfectly suited for a Mediterranean Southwest landscape style. We like to make this Fruitless Olive a focal point in a landscape by installing nighttime lighting in and around the tree to show off its interesting, bumpy gray multi-trunk structure. The foliage is a stunning gray/green and silver coloring, and the spring blooms of a sweet cream color add to this tree’s attractive look. Fruitless Olive trees thrive with full sun exposure and are able to tolerate poor, stony, and shallow soils. With very little water requirements once established, this hardy evergreen can grow with a wide spreading canopy, making this a great tree for use as a shade tree for a backyard entertaining area or naturally cooling a home.
Indian Laurels (Ficus nitida ‘Columns’) – This column variety of the Ficus grows into a medium to large tree that adds instant privacy. Indian Laurels are both heat and drought tolerant, and it tends to grow faster once the heat hits – a perfect summer tree! This water-wise tree can be pruned into any shape and looks great planted in rows along driveways or property borders. So, let them grow tall and bushy or keep them smaller and narrow, giving you the exact look you want. The dense green foliage creates much needed shade during our hot summer months.
Timber Bamboo (Phyllostachys bambusoides) – Try something new, choose Bamboo! Bamboo is a great addition to any landscape, especially those with a tropical or Zen style. Timber bamboo has bright green foliage that grows dense with fat bamboo shoots, which pairs perfect plants with light green coloring. This is the most common clumping bamboo variety, perfect for use as a windbreak or privacy screen. Well suited for urban landscapes due to its upright growth habit. We love to plant this easy-to-grow tree in groups for a living wall around a backyard retreat or as a single focal piece in a meditation garden.
California Pepper (Schinus molle) –The bright green, fern-like leaves and the bright red berries along with the weeping shape of the California Pepper tree creates a stunning addition to any landscape. Available in single or multi-trunk varieties, its gnarled, thick trunk adds character to a yard. Use nighttime lighting to create a dramatic silhouette. California Pepper trees require little water and, once established, you may never have to water this tree again. They have an upright yet broad canopy growth that provides much needed shade, perfect for a family picnic spot. This lovely evergreen thrives in heat and is drought tolerant.
Ficus (Ficus rubiginosa) – The Ficus can tolerate salt spray which makes it great for beach homes; not a surprise that this is a popular tree found throughout SoCal! It thrives in full sun exposure, but can grow in partial shade, and is drought tolerant. This stunning tree has a dense growth habit that provides generous amounts of shade that can naturally cool a home when planted strategically. And since this is a fast-growing evergreen, you can enjoy more shade without the long wait. We like to plant them in rows to create a natural privacy wall and block unwanted views or as a lawn tree. The Ficus rubiginosa has beautiful lush, glossy green foliage and thick gray trunk(s), we offer both the single and multi-trunk varieties.
