Making Our Communities A Greener Place

The Importance of a Green Environment

For most people, spending time outside and getting fresh air is one of the highlights of living in the city, where you never run out of things to do. Why, then, do we spend comparatively little time and money on designing outdoor and functional spaces that people would love to enjoy?

By making our cities green with gardens, parks, walkways, and “living walls”, people will get outside more; people would want to spend more time outdoors than at home watching TV and therefore be more active and healthier.

In time that would lead to less traffic and less pollution of our cities and the air that we breath in. And yet we still hesitate to put the time and money into these spaces.

I was recently walking through the city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands and enjoying the never-ending landscapes through the streets, block after block. I walked much further than I normally walk back home in California. I did not even realize how far I had wandered until later in the day.

After my blissful tour of the city, I was so physically tired that I slept like a baby. Who knew that fresh air and exercise would help with sleep! The greenery, the landscape, and all the nature were the reasons that I enjoyed every single minute of my walk.

Of course, the annual rain that most European countries get is way more than we see in California, but we can create the same greenery with drought-tolerant plants, mostly native to our region.

More Green in Our California Regions

I have designed over thousands of yards with drought-tolerant plants without making it look like a cactus yard. We have many plants and trees that have color year-round, from the seasonal colorful blooms of flowers and leaf colors that vary from different shades of green, red, purple, yellow, silver and more.

Imagine having an Olive tree (silver and green leaves), a Purple Leaf Plum tree (burgundy and red leaves), a few Italian Cypress trees (dark green), a Golden Arborvitae (dwarf golden leaf cypress look-alike), a Silver Dollar Eucalyptus (Silver and white leaves) and a Purple Smoke tree (purple leaves) in your yard. The foliage from these trees alone add multiple layers of color throughout a landscape.

To decorate with flowers, I love using White Iceberg Roses, Lavender, and succulents! This will create a year-round colorful design in your yard with very low maintenance needed.

In the art of designing, whether it is for a building, homeowners’ yard, or parks, it is essential to understand the personality of the job site. Moon Valley Nurseries designers are not only filled with knowledge, passion and hard work, but they are true artists.

I am extremely passionate about landscape, designing customers yards, shopping centers, malls and city’s public landscaping. Creating greenery and adding more oxygen into our planet is important to me and I do my best to contribute as much as I can, and I encourage my customers to do the same.

Twenty years ago, I started watering my grandfather’s olive trees at age 13 for a summer job, and that is where I fell in love with nature and landscape. Although I consider myself an Olive tree expert, I did work with many different trees before becoming a certified landscape designer.

In California, climate zones are also extremely important to pay attention to, and this is due to our unique micro climates. A King palm will not do great in Murrieta or Temecula, but just 30 minutes south (San Diego) or 30 minutes north (Orange county and Los Angeles) it will thrive in any planting spot. Knowing this is very important, not only to make the best recommendations, but for the sake of the plant.
