In California, making our yards private is a priority. These five hedges of spring can help! Spring is here, and the weather is perfect for hanging out in our yards. Creating privacy and keeping nosy neighbors at bay helps to make our home a sanctuary. The good news is that we can create private yards, and do it without sacrificing beauty.

Privacy Hedges of Spring for Yards in California

Privacy hedges are an excellent addition to yards in California. We can block unwanted views by planting hedges. Hedges can create a sound barrier, which is ideal for those living near busy streets. These hedges of spring can bring lots of color and shade to our landscape. Sure, we can build a fence, and this can create privacy. The natural solution can increase property value and is good for the environment, too.

Our Top Hedges for Spring Planting

Podocarpus:

These are fast-growing privacy hedges that are perfect for planting along sidewalks. They feature lush, green foliage that is soft to the touch. We also like to plant them near patios.

If you live in high wind areas, they are excellent windbreaks. Plant them near structures or sidewalks. The roots will rarely lift or crack sidewalks. Planting this evergreen hedge along a fence allows you to enjoy your backyard sanctuary.

Indian Laurel Column:

Keep your yard private all year long with these fast-growing privacy hedges. They are evergreen so they can keep their lush greenery throughout the year. They are water-wise, too, which is an important feature in California.

Urban properties can benefit from these columns, too! Another great thing about these spring hedges is that they can create plenty of shade. Plant these evergreen Indian Laurel columns in your landscape and build a living wall!

Carolina Cherry:

Those that live in tract homes can keep their yard private, no matter how close the neighbor’s property line may be. We like to use this ornamental tree as a privacy hedge to help keep nosy neighbors from peering over the fence!

Bonus points for their outstanding ability to tolerate heat, drought, and wind. Bright-green foliage, fragrant creamy-white flowers, what’s not to love? Plus, their near-perfect shape means there are few maintenance requirements.

Bottlebrush:

These are a favorite evergreen hedge throughout Southern California. It is easy to see why! Showy bottlebrush-like flower spikes can bloom and create a landscape scene of blood-red and blue-green colors.

We like to use bottlebrush plants to add a splash of color to any yard. They attract hummingbirds, too, so enjoy the view. Of course, we also like to line them up along property lines to create a privacy screen full of color. Bonus - their compact size makes them suitable for many types of yards in SoCal.

Italian Cypress:

These elegant and classy columnar evergreens are a common sight in  SoCal neighborhoods. They are often planted in a row. In a row, they can create a natural property divider.

Some homeowners prefer to line them up along a driveway, where they can create a grand entrance. These are narrow, fast-growing privacy hedges that thrive in our area. Plant an Italian Cypress to bring the look of the Mediterranean to our yards.
