While we have all been enjoying this amazing late-spring weather we all know those triple digit days are right around the corner. Over time, our landscapes will start to show the signs of the added heat and one of the first signs is in the lawn.
Around mid-May is when the low temperatures start to rise above 65 degrees. That is when it's time to transition from the winter ryegrass to the Bermuda grass. Below are a few tips and suggestions our nursery pros recommend for a great lawn this summer.
Mowing
Once you plant Bermuda grass it is there to stay. To help it grow it needs the sun and to give it the sun you need to lower the lawn mower to 1-1.5 inches to allow the sunlight to reach the Bermuda grass. This helps the Bermuda come out of dormancy.
Also, be sure to remove the grass clippings. The last thing you want to do is to cut the grass and still leave a layer of clipping that would prevent the sun from reaching the dormant Bermuda grass.
Watering
Always remember to water deeply. This applies to everything on your landscape and especially the grass. Depending on the needs on your grass watering should be done every 1-3 days.
Be sure to set your timer in the cool morning hours as this helps minimize evaporation and fungus. Also, keep an eye on your sprinkler system as well. Many homeowners say they water their landscape, but some areas have dry or dead grass. It's a great time now, while it's still not too hot out, to test the sprinkler system to make sure every area is getting adequate water.
Fertilize
You can give that summer lawn a boost with our fast acting Moon Royale Professional Turf Fertilizer. In most cases, you will see results in just four days, and it gets stronger as it goes to work greening up your lawn.
Benefits of a properly fertilized grass are:
But the bottom line is this. Our Moon Royale is designed to produce thick, long lasting, and healthy grass in our natives soils.
The main reason why our Moon Royale was created was for use as a tool to help break up our tough native soils that keep vital nutrients and iron from being absorbed by roots. That is why we included sulfur in our Moon Royale. It helps break down the tough soils and fight the salts to quickly turn your lawn dark green.
The 19%(N) 6%(P) 13%(K) blend in the Moon Royale is the perfect ratio of Nitrogen for green leaves, Phosphorous for strong roots, and Potash for sturdy stems that grass really loves
Best of all, our Moon Royale is easy to use using either a drop or broadcast type fertilizer spreader. See bag for complete instructions and application rates.
In addition to fertilizing, you also may want to consider using our Moon Green and out Soil and Water Conditioner. Both of these combat our tough western soils and can aid in the development on your grass.
Moon Green
Iron Chlorosis is a problem for many of us homeowners in our region, and Moon Green helps reduce soil alkalinity, neutralize caliche/tight clay type soils, and promotes darker and greener leaves and grass. Infusing Moon Green with Furst liquid brings the critical organic enzymes and amino acids that help stimulate the growth signals within plants. These nutrients help stimulate root hair growth and stronger cell development, allowing water and important micro-nutrients to pass through to stems and leaves much more efficiently.
Soil and Water Conditioner
To counteract the difficult soil in our region, Moon Valley Nurseries has developed a Soil and Water Conditioner that contains two special elements: Sulfur reduces the high Ph by flushing out the excess salt buildup in the root system. The removal of the excess salt creates a soil base that converts nutrients easily. Gypsum is the other special element and it will loosen soil leading to better drainage and healthier soils. Several applications per year will make a noticeable difference.
