Tree roots are a common concern for homeowners, especially when they start creeping up above the ground and become visible. This can lead to unsightly bumps in the yard and even damage to infrastructure such as walkways, pools, and walls. However, there are several tips and techniques that can help homeowners deal with this issue without having to sacrifice the beauty and benefits of having trees and plants on their property.

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” -Benjamin Franklin.
Moon Valley Nurseries couldn’t agree with that statement more. It is very difficult to get tree roots back below the grass line once they have come up. The reason they raise to the surface is because they are competing for resources, i.e., water and nutrients.  Grass is very good at taking all it wants before water and nutrients seep down into the soil.  If you have irrigation, deep waterings will help keep roots below the surface.

Mowing over roots is no fun for homeowners and if they accidentally cut the roots, they are continually damaging the tree’s health and growth.  In some cases, you can put some soil down around the roots to help make it easier to mow, but you’ll need help from an expert at Moon Valley Nurseries to help determine how much can be done. If you decide to simply put 3 inches of soil all over the ground and bury the roots you could inadvertently cause even more stress and damage to your tree.  Roots need oxygen just as much as water and nutrients and by burying them under more soil you restrict the amount of oxygen they can acquire.

Another option to consider is in the instance where tree roots are growing toward a sidewalk or home, implementing an underground root barrier. These barriers are made of materials such as plastic or metal and are installed underground around the perimeter of the tree. The barrier acts as a physical obstacle, preventing the roots from growing outwards and encroaching on the grass line. Root barriers should be installed by a professional to ensure proper placement and to avoid damaging the tree's root system.

Lastly, if the tree roots are causing significant damage or pose a risk to nearby structures, it may be necessary to consider a tree or plant removal. While this may be a difficult decision to make, especially if the tree holds sentimental value or is an important part of the landscape, it is essential to prioritize the safety and well-being of the property and its occupants.  With the most extensive selection of trees and plants, and the top installation teams in the industry, Moon Valley Nurseries is prepared to replace any tree and plant that may have the potential for damaging your landscape.
