Tips from our nursery pros for a weed free yard this spring and Summer

How to remove, how to prevent, and additional tips

The spring season is here and if you're a regular reader of our blog  you were then well prepared for what is perhaps the biggest weed and allergy season we have ever had due to all the rain. Now, if your landscape is looking like something a rainforest, there is no need to panic. The experts at Moon Valley Nurseries are here to help you turn that jungle into the perfect landscape that will turn heads in the neighborhood this spring and into the summer. We even have a coupon here to get your started click --->

Step #1: Remove The Weeds

This is as straightforward as it gets, and yes we know. Pulling weeds isn't how you want to spend a weekend morning. However, you need to get this done and the sooner you do it the better. Each passing day allows the weeds roots to grow deeper and the flowers more time to pollinate spreading more weeds around the yard.

One option is the old-fashioned way. Go out there with some gloves, your hands, and some muscle and yank the weeds out. Remember to get the entire weed. A hoe or shovel can do the trick.

If you have a weed infestation (the jungle we were talking about) it's a good idea to pick up a herbicide from Moon Valley Nurseries, as we stock all things needed to remove those pesky weeds.

Weed Free Zone (for grass)
This controls more than 80 of the toughest-to-control weeds in your yard. This can also be used to control grass that is getting out of control as well in your landscape.

Weed Out With Q
This proven solution is great for that crabgrass that can just be unbearable in your landscape. This works by penetrating the weed leaves and then traveling throughout the entire plant

Killzall
This works quickly to eliminate systemically broadleaf or grassy weeds, clear turf for lawn renovation, prevent stump regrowth, and clean areas near fences, paths, patios, driveways, and buildings.

Step #2: Pre-Emergent Herbicides

Now that you have removed all the weeds from your yard it is time to use pre-emergent herbicides as the weeds from someone else's home can travel to your yard.  Moon Valley Nurseries again has you covered.

AMAZE Grass & Weed Preventer
We recommend AMAZE as our choice for granular grass & weed prevention. It's easy to apply and extremely effective against the common unwanted weeds and grasses in Arizona gardens. Easy to follow instructions are on the bag.
Weed Impede RTU
This RTU (Ready-to-use) herbicide is a pre-mixed concentrate that can be applied straight from the bottle through the attached nozzle. Weed Impede is our top choice for liquid herbicides, as they work great against common Arizona weeds and grasses
Weed Impede Concentrate
This is the concentrated form of the Weed Impede RTU - this contains a full strength concentrate, so while it's not ready to use out of the bottle, you usually get more bang for your buck than RTU's
Weed Impede 2 in 1
Unlike other pre-emergents, this also kills weeds and prevents new ones from forming for up to six months. This means you can apply this product before having to pull out the weeds yourself, and is by far the easiest solution to weed control.

Applying a pre-emergent herbicide is an easy way to reduce the amount of time you have to spend working in your yard and increases the amount of time you can actually spend enjoying your yard right away.  Keeping your weeds in control not only ensures an attractive landscape, but creates a much healthier environment for the rest of your plants and gardens. It’s a lot easier to visit any Moon Valley Nursery and pick out the right pre-emergent herbicide than it is to pick out weeds in your yard all spring!

Step #3: Additional Options To Keep Weeds Away

In addition to the pre-emergent herbicides, there are a few other things you can do to keep those weeds away. Mulch is a fantastic option. Weeds like every other plant need sunlight to survive. The mulch acts as a barrier to keep the weeds seeds away.

Another option is to check where your watering and for how long. Check to make sure there are no broken lines and check to make sure one area isn't getting over watered. If you need more information on proper watering, be sure to download our Watering 101 Guide right here
