September Landscape and Garden Tips

Take Care of your Yard the Right Way

September is the month where lots of things start to change. The kids are settling into school after a fun summer, football parties are starting up, and the weather is starting to change for the better!

We are finally starting to come out of the hot summer and into cooler fall. As much as we are excited for cooler temperatures (and getting to wear your favorite sweatshirt again), our landscape is even more excited!

Fall is the Best Planting Season

Fall is the time when our trees and plants can efficiently establish themselves in their new environment. With the changing of the season, there are a few things we need to remember so that our landscapes and gardens can thrive.

Arizona Homeowners: While the weather is going to be cooling down, there is still a good chance that the heat might come back for a few more days. Be mindful of the temperatures and adjust accordingly for your yard.

Watering Your Landscape

With the cooler nights and days, it’s important to change our watering routine again. For fall, we need to water less often than we do during the hot summer. Typically, once our daytime temperatures reach 85-100 degrees, we move away from our summer watering schedule.

Multiple factors play into how much you need to water. Those factors include the type of tree or plant and the planting location. If you would like more help, don’t hesitate to reach out to one of our nursery pros at your nearest Moon Valley Nursery location.

Watering Your Lawn

Now’s a great time to help cut the amount of water we use by reducing the frequency that we water our lawns. With cooler weather, our lawns will retain more moisture longer, cutting back on our usage. So, we need to cut back on the frequency of watering, not the actual amount used when watering.

Fertilizing Your Trees and Plants

Fertilizing your trees, palms, and other plants will help them grow to their full potential through the fall and recover from any heat stress they may have endured over the summer. Now is the perfect time to give additional help with the growing process. Fertilizers allow trees and plants to intake more nutrients and water, along with making nutrients more readily available.

Moon Valley Nurseries has a line of custom-developed fertilizers, such as Moon Juice pictured above, that can be used on a variety of landscape materials including turf, grass, palms, desert trees, shade trees, and so much more.

Tree Care

This is the beginning of the season where you will start to see your trees grow more than you have the last few months.

Trim off the dead or damaged branches so that new growth has room to bloom. Proper tree care is vital for strong growth in this fall season. Were the monsoons rough on your landscape? No need to worry. Our professional tree care team is here to help. They can remove any dead, damaged, or overgrown branches. Let us clean up your landscape!

Trees to Plant in the Fall

Tipu Tree

The Tipu is an excellent tree in any landscape, especially when you want to create massive canopies of shade quickly. Whether it is to cool your home, shade a patio, or protect the other plants in your yard, the Tipu tree is the perfect fit.

It also requires little maintenance as it does extremely well in different types of soil and drought-like conditions. Because of its toughness, it has quickly become a favorite in many areas for public parks and walkways, which helps save money on maintenance while creating a more livable neighborhood.

This is also one of the best waterwise trees to use for xeriscaping and low-water homes due to its ability to withstand drought.

Ficus Indian Laurel Tree

The Ficus Indian Laurel is a beautiful dense shade tree that looks stunning and can be used in your landscape in many ways. It doesn’t hurt that this tree comes in multiple aesthetics such as single trunk, multi-trunk, and column form (perfect for hedges!).

This tried and true tree has shown its ability to thrive in the harsh conditions in Arizona. Because of its durability, beauty, and mass amounts of shade it provides, the Indian Laurel has become the top-selling tree at Moon Valley Nurseries.

Piru Queen Palm Tree

Specially grown in our Arizona and Southern California farms, the Piru Queen palm is unlike any other Queen palms. Our Piru Queen palms feature thicker and harder trunks, denser and greener fronds, and produce fuller crowns than the ones you will find in other nurseries.

Our Piru Queen Palms can handle hot summers, cold winters, and windy days. The palm is supported by a rounded trunk, which makes it an ideal palm option for tight or narrow spaces around your pool. It does require overhead space as the palm grows to statuesque heights.
