Tipu Tree: Tree of the Week
It is hard to beat the massive shade coverage that Tipu trees provide! This semi-evergreen tree is a favorite tree throughout the Las Vegas area because they can bring plenty of shade and beauty to any size landscape. The Tipuana tipu tree is world famous for its high-spreading canopy and attractive foliage that casts shade wherever they are planted. Summertime in Las Vegas does not have to be spent indoors. Enjoy the great outdoors and let this tree block the blistering sunlight.
There is no do doubt that this is a fantastic shade tree. When discussing Tipu trees, we also need to mention its feathery, bright bluish-green foliage and the showy golden-colored blooms. The blooms arrive in spring and can last to early summer. Keep a lookout for butterflies that love the flowers, too!
Tipu trees are native to South America and thrive in warmer climates. They are the perfect tree for landscapes in Las Vegas, too. They have a fast growth rate, so anyone that is looking to provide cooling shade over a larger space will want to have one in their yard. In no time at all, you’ll be able to view their exotic and tropical appearance! Homeowners may want to plant them as an excellent street tree or lawn tree. Feel free to rest under its high canopy to escape the sun! And, if you don’t have a garage to park your car, park the car next to a Tipu tree – it will help keep cars cool!
Saving money is harder when the temperatures soar. In the summer, we will turn on the AC unit and watch as our utility bill skyrockets. There is a way to reduce the temperatures inside a home without having to suffer from the heat – plant specimen Tipu trees! With proper planting around a house, the massive amount of shade these trees provide can reduce the heat inside your home! Our landscape design specialist will be glad to show you where to plant them to reduce the temperatures inside of your home! Ask us how!
Tipuana tipu are also excellent permaculture trees. They absorb nitrogen from the air and put it in the soil, enriching the soil along the way. Since these trees are good for the soil, they can also benefit the other plants in your garden!
How to Grow Tipu Tree in Las Vegas
Watering: Help the soil settle around the roots with deep watering. Water about two to three times a week in the summer. Use a drip or soaker-type water hose. Keep the soil moist, but not wet. Use mulch around the base of the tree so that it can help retain water during the summertime. Once established, Tipu trees have a high tolerance to drought.
Light Exposure: Tipu trees thrive in a location with full sun exposure. At least six hours of direct sunlight per day is beneficial.
Pruning: Remove any broken, dead, or diseased branches from limbs. Remove any branches flush with limbs and limbs flush with trunks.
Fertilizer: Feed with a regular diet of our specially blended fertilizers. Purchase all Moon Valley Nurseries fertilizers at any of our nurseries in Las Vegas.
