Need a tree that will keep its green all year? Well, look no further. Evergreens are the answer! Evergreen trees keep their green foliage throughout the year, providing much needed color to our arid environment. Whether you need a tree for naturally cooling down your home, or privacy from nosy neighbors, or blocking unwanted views and noises, or maybe for a nice shady entertaining area, Moon Valley Nurseries has you covered! We have been custom-growing the best-quality trees for over 20 years at our local grow farms, making sure our trees will thrive in your landscape. There are many varieties of evergreens to choose from, and our knowledgeable nursery pros can help you select the perfect evergreen for your needs. Here are some of our favorites:

Fruitless Olive (Olea europaea ‘Wilsonii’) – Moon Valley Nurseries grows Fruitless Olive strain that is certified truly fruitless. This drought tolerant, medium sized tree is perfectly suited for a Mediterranean Southwest landscape style. We like to use nighttime lighting in and around this Fruitless Olive to create a dramatic focal point and to show off its interesting multi-trunk structure. The foliage is a stunning gray/green and silver coloring. Fruitless Olive trees crave full sun exposure and are able to tolerate poor, stony, shallow soils; so, plant this tree on a variety of land conditions and it will grow. Fruitless Olive trees require very little water once established. This hardy evergreen can grow with a wide spreading canopy, making this a great tree for use as a shade tree to escape the blistering sun or cooling down a home when properly placed.

Live Oak (Quercus virginiana) – This long-lived evergreen will delight generations to come. This is the type of tree where you would find initials carved into the trunk. Live Oaks are drought tolerant and require low water once established. Live Oaks have dense, dark green leaves that make up the wide spreading canopy that blocks the sun’s harsh rays. Use the giant canopy as a shady spot for a picnic table and let the kids explore and climb up the strong limbs. Live Oaks are a clean tree so they make great lawn trees and are great placed around pools and patios. Plant them in rows to create a natural and beautiful privacy wall. Homeowners love its ability to tolerate extreme wind conditions.

Italian Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens ‘Glauca’) – Perfect for a more formal look. The Italian Cypress have a columnar form and grow narrow, great for tight spaces. Brings the classic Mediterranean style to any landscape. We like to use these lined up along a driveway, creating a grand entrance. Ideal for use as a privacy hedge or windbreak when planted in rows. Blue-green foliage grows in dense and since the Italian Cypress is fast growing, shade and privacy will practically be instant. This evergreen is perfect for Nevada landscapes due to its drought and heat tolerance. Requires low to moderate water one established.

Oleander Tree (Nerium oleander) – Oleander trees are extremely drought tolerant which is a greatly appreciated attribute for those of us in Las Vegas! These evergreens provide vibrant color to any landscape, bringing year-round interest with its dark green, leathery, semi-glossy leaves. Fragrant flowers ranging from colors of white, red, and pink appear in late spring into fall. These beautiful flowers attract butterflies and other pollinators, bringing more interest to a yard. We like to use Oleanders as a hedge or a lawn tree. Their shape can be determined by how you prune them. Oleander trees are low maintenance, requiring little to no water once established. A great addition to any style yard or landscape.

African Sumac (Rhus lancea) –A favorite throughout the Southwest. The African Sumac tree thrives in hot, dry climates just like ours here in Las Vegas. They are the superior drought tolerant tree. Deep green foliage grows naturally in an umbrella-like shape but can easily be pruned into any desired shape. They are easy to prune and have minimal maintenance requirements. Their multi-trunk variety resembles the look of an olive tree. African Sumacs are very durable trees that can withstand intense desert heat, cold, and high winds. We like to use these trees as a specimen lawn tree or in rows as a natural windbreak and privacy wall. Rhus lancea require little to moderate watering once established.
