We all know about the benefits of landscaping around our homes but what about our pools? It is just as beneficial - especially for those of us in Las Vegas. Not only does it create a personal retreat for you, it can provide shade which cools down the water. Making for an even more refreshing swim!

Even though its hot, summer is the perfect time to update your pool landscape and relish the escape from the summer sun. By planting in the summer, your new landscape will be well established before the colder winter weather. Don’t want to dig and plant in the sweltering heat? No problem, we will do it! Moon Valley Nurseries has seasoned professional planting crews that will do all the work – from digging to installation.

No matter the style or design you have in mind, our nursery pros can help. Our nursery pros can design the landscape of your dreams and help you select the right palms, trees, and plants for that look. Moon Valley Nurseries custom-grows all our own palms, trees, shrubs, and plant at our own local grow farms, to ensure that they will thrive in Las Vegas. So, why not create your own personal oasis! Keep on reading to see what our pros suggest for landscaping around a pool.

Palm Trees

Want the look of a relaxing resort or a tropical oasis? Palm trees are the way to go! Palms are a great choice for planting around a pool since they are very clean, there is very little to no litter. They also have small fibrous root systems, so the roots won’t damage any concrete that’s surrounding the pool.  We love Piru Queen Palms! These have the go-to tropical look that people adore. This durable evergreen palm has classic feathery, glossy, bright green palm fronds that can provide ample shade. A must-have for any landscape in Las Vegas is the extremely hardy and rare, Mexican Blue Palm. It features dramatic silvery blue foliage that is great for adding color contrast and breaking up the greenery. It fits well with any landscape style, particularly Mediterranean and desert styles. Pygmy Date Palms are ideal for tight spaces or as a container palm. We love to use these to fill in under taller palms and trees or planting them in groups for a focal point or natural barrier.

Shade Trees

Shade trees will provide much-needed shade that will naturally cool down your pool, making that afternoon swim even more refreshing!  Chinese Pistache is a beautiful and clean deciduous shade tree. It has a dark green umbrella-shaped canopy that provides plenty of shade; great for the Las Vegas area as it is drought and pest resistant, water-wise, and easy to care for. Another of our favorites is the Bay Laurel. They have a dense growth habit which makes them ideal for hedges and privacy screens. We also love to use these to block noise and create shade. This water-wise evergreen is a must-have for any chef, use the aromatic Bay leaves to add flavor to many dishes. Japanese Blueberry

 Picture-Perfect Additions

There is more to landscapes than just trees and palms. Want to add color and texture? Add a few succulents to create a fun and interesting look! Succulents are great additions to poolside landscapes due to their low maintenance needs and low water use. We carry a large selection of aloes, agaves, and so many more types of succulents; visit your nearest Moon Valley Nursery to see in person the variety. Ornamental grasses are a simple an easy way to add variations to your landscape. Deer Grass helps soften rock features and is a popular accent in many desert landscapes. Purple Fountain Grass that adds color with its purple and green foliage. We love to use them as accents or borders; they also work well in pots. Want something with more wow? Birds of Paradise bring the bright colors of the tropics to any poolside landscape.
