The Best Trees to Plant Around

There’s nothing like jumping into the cool, refreshing water of our pools during the hot Las Vegas’ summer. But why stop the relaxing atmosphere at the pool? Adding trees around a pool can help create privacy, shade, and a personal getaway. When looking to add trees to a pool area, it is important to look for trees that have little cleanup, non-invasive roots, and fit the style you want. Below are a few of our top trees to plant poolside.

Southern Live Oak Tree

Live Oak:

(Quercus virginiana)

This large evergreen tree, also known as Southern Live Oak, has hardly any cleanup which is ideal for pool areas. With age, the trunk will darken while the narrow oval leaves will stay shiny, dark green on top and whitish beneath. Live Oaks create much needed shade in our hot climate, which these trees are grown to handle. Quercus virginiana are staples in the Southwest, perfect and forever classic.

Mediterranean Fan Palm

Mediterranean Fan Palm:

(Chamaerops humilis)

This tropical and resort-style, multi-trunk palm is the perfect addition to any poolside project. Mediterranean Fan Palms have green to bluish-green fan-shaped fronds that contrast to the dark brown trunks that grow close together creating a full look. They are durable palms that require minimal maintenance and cleanup. Chamaerops humilis can even become drought tolerant over time.

Piru Queen Palms

Piru Queen Palm:

(Syagrus romanzoffiana ‘Piru’)

Queen Palms have the go-to tropical look that we all love. Piru Queen Palms have thicker crowns, greener fronds, and thicker trunks than older varieties of Queen Palms. This durable evergreen palm has classic feathery, glossy palm fronds that are bright green in color. We grow these palms to be extremely hardy to heat, making them perfect for Nevada temperatures.

Japanese green emerald blueberry tree

Green Emerald Blueberry

(Elaeocarpus decipiens)

These exotic, evergreen trees bring year-round interest! In the spring, the leaves are bronze/rust colored that matures to a lush, shiny green color. Elaeocarpus decipiens are excellent topiary trees that require very little pruning. These slow growing trees thrive in full sun and require regular watering. Tiny, scented flower clusters bloom in the summer that attracts butterflies, so relax in your pool and enjoy the view!

Pygmy date palm

Pygmy Date Palm:

(Phoenix roebelenii)

These dwarf palms grow in both single and multi-trunk varieties, giving you options on the look you want. Their fine-textured, soft, curving leaves form a dense crown. Pygmy Date Palms are ideal for tight spaces and can even be planted in pots. Their roots are non-invasive and they are one of the cleanest palms available, perfect for around pools. A bonus is that these long-life span palms are able to adapt to all types of soil.
