There are many reasons to plant trees and palms in the heat of the summer. The top reason is to provide shade for our unrelenting summer heat. These are the top ten trees and palms to plant in the summer.

Mesquite Tree The mesquite trees are native to the southwest desert region. The most popular is the Chilean Mesquite because it is a thornless variety.   They are remarkably drought tolerant and grow fast. It provides amazing shade with its canopy, which goes well in any landscapes. This is the time to plant Mesquite tree because this is the time they grow.

Desert Museum Palo Verde This is a hybrid of the Native Palo Verde, which in turn makes for a super clean tree. This tree provides filtered shade and boasts an amazing golden bloom from late spring through summer. The Palo Verde is a low water tree that compliments any desert landscape.

Dalbergia Sissoo The Sissoo tree is widely used in residential properties because of fast growth rate. They are a low water use tree that absolutely LOVE the heat. The hotter it is the faster it grows. It's "Aspen" like leaf has made it a popular choice among many people.

Tipuana Tipu The Tipu loves the Arizona summer heat and climate.  Its unique umbrella canopy provides immense amounts of shade that will allow you and your family to enjoy your back yard on most summer days. It has a gorgeous Apricot colored bloom throughout spring and summer and provides an incredibly unique leaf structure.

Ficus Nitida The Ficus nitida are among the most beautiful and versatile trees for any landscape. Don’t let the amazingly green appearance fool you as they are one of the most water-wise trees available. Lush, dense foliage provides dense canopies of shade from strong softwood branches.

Indian Laurels are one of our favorite trees and easily the most popular tree in our system of nurseries and with our customers throughout the southwest.

Mediterranean Fan Palm This palm tree is slow growing and fits well in just about any landscape. Like most palms, it is great to plant because they thrive in our warm Arizona soil. These dwarf palms can be planted in small spaces.

Mexican Fan Palm This palm thrives in the dry desert heat. It a classic palm that canvases most of the valley. The best time to plant these palms is right now because they love to grow in these summer conditions.

Sago Palm The Sago Palm is technically a Cycad. The Sago is the oldest tree known to man and one of the most adaptable plants we carry. It can grow in full shade and full sun. ( YES, FULL SUN! ). Plant them as a focal point or potted plant on the patio of your courtyard.

Pineapple Palm The Pineapple Palm loves to be planted during this time of year. It is a slow grower that requires little water once established. It is often referred to as the Pineapple Palm because of its unique pineapple-like shape for during its early life-stages.

Piru Queen Palm The Piru Queen Palm is not to be mistaken for the big box store palms they ship in from Florida. The Piru Queen Palm is a hardier tree in every way. Piru Queen Palms grow lush, thicker, greener crowns. Planting Piru Queen Palms in clusters will provide an amazing tropical look as well as some filtered shade. They love the summer heat!
