When planting Piru Queen Palms, it’s important to first understand that you’re planting a tropical plant which is going to require nutrients and little more care than planting something like a Mesquite tree. Queen Palms must be fertilized in order to get the most out of them. We always tell our customers that “you wouldn’t go a year without feeding your dog, so why go a year without feeding your trees?” When fertilizing, it’s very important that you use the proper blend to feed your palm trees.
One of the most important things your queen palm needs is called Manganese Sulfate. This delivering agent sends the fertilizer, nutrients and water to your palm; without this your water and fertilizer is less effective, which can lead to one very common problem; frizzle top. Using a product once a month such as our Super Palm Juice, or any other products that contains the proper balance of Manganese Sulfate and other vital micro-nutrients will prevent the most common issues with Queen Palms. Using Super Palm Juice in conjunction with our Moon Dust Fertilizer will keep your palm nice, green and continuously growing. This combination has everything your palm needs to be healthy; nitrogen, iron, phosphorus, and manganese sulfate.Another product that you can add to all of your plants that’s useful in our soil is called Moon Green, this is a soil acidifier and iron supplement. Our soil is generally very high in PH (or alkalinity). This is often the cause of many problems with the roots of our plants. Simply adding this to your normal fertilizing schedule will greatly increase the health of your plants and especially your Piru Queen Palms. Lowering your soil’s PH will help increase water efficiency and also breaks down our tough clay soils so that the roots are able to better penetrate the soil, growing stronger and making them less apt to damage from our hard soil and water.
Now that you know what Piru Queen Palms are, what they need to grow, and why you should have no problem keeping your yard looking like a lush tropical paradise, just remember you can stop into any Moon Valley Nursery location with any questions (or ask us right here on our blog) regarding your palms and one of our certified nursery professionals will get you going in the right direction
