After you’ve picked up your Christmas Tree from Moon Valley Nurseries it’s important to know how to keep your Christmas tree looking as fresh as possible. These six tips will help keep your Christmas tree fresh throughout the holiday season.

Display your tree away from sources of heat
Anything that gives off heat (fireplace, stove, direct sunlight, heaters, heat vents) can speed up the evaporation and moisture loss of the tree.
Put Your Tree in a Stand and Water Immediately
Once your home, place the tree in water as soon as possible. Your tree will be very thirsty and will need plenty of water. As a general rule, stands should provide 1 quart of water per inch of stem diameter.
Just Use Tap Water or Tree Fresh
Basic water or water with professionally developed tree preservative (available at Moon Valley Nursery Christmas tree lots) are the best choices to keep trees fresh. Stay away from soda or sugar water (old wives tales for preserving trees) as these clog the pores of the tree and can actually do more harm than good.
Check the water level daily
Trees are thirsty and you do not want to allow the water level to drop below the fresh cut. The fresh cut can seal up if the water level drops below it. If this happens, you will then have to make another fresh cut, which is even harder when the tree is decorated. Your tree will absorb as much as a gallon of water or more in the first 24 hours and one or more quarts a day. A well-watered tree prevents the needles from drying up and falling off. Plus, fresh water maintains the trees fragrance.
Check for sap leakage
Check your tree occasionally for any sap that has leaked from your tree and onto your furniture or floor. Catching any sap leakages now will make them easier to remove.
Decorating
Always be sure to inspect the lights before you place them on your tree and be sure to turn the lights off when leaving the house or going to bed.
