At Moon Valley Nurseries, we provide residents of Arizona with lovely heat-resistant plants. Our team is well-versed on which plants can withstand the heat and how to best care for them once they're safely in your garden. We can also help you design your entire landscape around a certain feature or aesthetic. Before you start planting your garden, be sure to talk to us about durable plants for extreme heat. Southern Heat Isn't Manageable for All Plants

It's no surprise that the extreme desert temperatures aren't suitable for most plants. Nevertheless, some flowers and foliage thrive in such conditions. The trick is finding the heat- and drought-tolerant plants that still mesh with your landscape's aesthetic. Fortunately, the team at Moon Valley Nurseries is ready to help you choose your plants and plan for their care. With our help, your garden will thrive despite the summer heat.

Which Plants Can Survive Extreme Heat?

So which plants are suitable for extreme temperatures and which should be left indoors? You have no shortage of options when it comes to choosing heat-tolerant flowers and plants. Some of our favorites include:

  • Sedum: Sedums are a type of succulent that responds well to heat. They require very little care and can withstand a whole slew of things that would kill most other plants. Droughts, poor soil, and humidity are no match for sedums.
  • Hardy Hibiscus: Get a taste of the tropics in your own backyard with hardy hibiscus. These flowers tolerate heat like a champion and grow to significant sizes. Consider using hibiscuses to create a canopy or another statement piece.
  • Gaillardia: These flowers work in all kinds of landscapes, from small gardens to large features. Gaillardias bloom early in the summer and often don't need to be pruned.
  • Geranium: These popular blooms tolerate heat better than other flowers. However, make sure to water your geraniums consistently and keep them in the shade whenever possible.
  • Marigold: Marigolds work well outdoors, indoors, and inside containers. Place them in full view of the sun and watch these beautiful golden flowers bloom.
  • Lantana: Lantana comes in a spectrum of colors and blooms all summer long. You won't need to worry about constant maintenance, and as an added bonus, these flowers are pollinator-friendly and deer-resistant. Ask us about lantana in your favorite color!
  • Coneflower: Coneflowers give you the aesthetic of daisies without worrying about withering in the heat. These large flowers are available in lots of colors and can even serve as a source of food for birds as autumn comes to a close.
  • Cosmos: Cosmos have silky petals and a daisy-like quality but won't wilt in intense heat. These flowers are native to Mexico and work well in desert gardens or less-than-ideal soil.
  • Lemon Verbena: Lemon verbena stands up well in the heat and brings a pleasant citrus scent to any garden. Many people choose to plant it near windows for both beautiful curb appeal and a sweet aroma.

Help Your Plants Beat the Heat

Although the plants listed above are especially equipped to survive hot temperatures, they'll likely need a little help. Part of managing a healthy garden in the American South is properly caring for your plants even when the forecast predicts 100-degree days. Here's what you can do to keep your flowers in full bloom:

  • Lots of Water: During the summer, it's a good idea to check your plant's soil more often. If the soil is completely dry, your plant likely needs a good long drink. Another sign that you need to water more is soil pulling away from the sides of the pot. Be careful not to oversaturate your plants with water!
  • Shade: Most of us prefer to sit in the shade on hot, sunny days, and the same is true for plants. When a heatwave hits, we recommend moving your plants out of direct sunlight.
  • Don't Prune: During a heatwave, leaves might start to wilt and appear dead. But don't be too hasty with pruning! Once the heat subsides, your plant might go back to normal, the discoloration being a symptom of stress.
