Ficus nitida

One of the best trees to plant right now, the Ficus nitida or Indian Laurel Column. These trees love the warm summer air and cast vast amounts of shade anywhere they are planted. Accented by their silver-grey trunks and deep green foliage, these trees are as beautiful as they are useful. These can be planted as a tree form around the perimeter or used the column style to create the perfect Hollywood Hedge. These privacy hedges are prized for their ability to give shade and privacy all while adding beauty to your landscape. Once established these trees are lower water and easy to care for.

Fruitless Olive

Nothing screams Tuscan escape like the Olive tree. Their silver blue foliage and unique branching structure makes these trees not only a beautiful focal point but one that gives off great amounts of shade all year long. These evergreen trees are easy to establish and are low water making them perfect for planting in the Southwest. These Olive trees are low liter making them perfect to plant around sitting areas or pools.

Chilean Mesquite

The desert favorite, Chilean Mesquite tree is perfect for nearly all landscapes. Their deep reddish-brown trunks are accented by small bright green leaves. They have an umbrella shaped canopy and grow fairly quickly once established. These trees are extremely drought tolerant, thriving in our climate. Plant these trees along fence lines to create shade and privacy or can even be used as a focal point.

Chinese Elm

The Chinese Elm, also called the Evergreen Elm is a quick growing shade tree that will give great shade. Smaller bright green leaves grow on this umbrella shaped canopy tree. These trees are easy to establish and can be grown in a wide range of soil types. These are also all grown locally making them perfectly acclimated to be planted all year long.

Shumard

While the Shumard isn’t evergreen, it has a very short dormant season based on our temperatures. These trees have large leaves with thick foliage. These trees have something the others on this list do not, they turn a beautiful red color in the fall giving you a sense of seasons to go with its cooling shade. These work great planted anywhere in your yard and also make great focal point trees when lite up at night.
