Peaches are delicious, nutritious, and we can grow them with nothing suspicious. Grow an edible garden and be a Rock-star! Peach trees are stylish and beautiful too. In fact, the sight of peach trees in bloom is magical. The flowers are pale pink, white/cream/gray and red, with a mildly intoxicating sweet aroma with hints of honey and almond – it is no wonder that their scent is a favorite ingredient often replicated in perfumes. Planting peach trees yields the good fortune of being both beautiful landscape trees and ones that can produce healthy fruits ideal for baking, preserves, or eating fresh-picked off the tree.

Why Grow Peach Trees?

There are many reasons to grow peach trees – you can pick your own homegrown fruit, and they are attractive landscape trees, with or without fruit. Also, peach trees can produce fuzzy fruits that are packed full of nutritional value. As a bonus, these are small trees that are perfect for any size landscape, and since they have a low-branching habit, we like to use them as privacy screens, where they can block unwanted views in style. Of course, we already mentioned the showy flowers that are sure to bring the wow factor to our yards when in bloom!

Nutritional Facts

Did you know that in some cultures, peach trees are considered the divine fruit of the gods and may even hold the key to keep us perpetually young? Fascinating! We are not sure if planting a peach tree in our yard is the fountain of youth we are after. However, these fuzzy fruits are full of nutrition and offer many health benefits, including combating free radicals, reducing inflammation, treating gut disorders, and supporting healthy eyes.

One medium sized peach contains about:

  • Vitamin C: 10 mg / 16% DV
  • Vitamin A: 489 IU / 9% DV
  • Potassium: 285 mg / 8% DV
  • Magnesium: 14 mg / 3% DV
  • Iron: .4 mg / 2% DV
  • Protein: 1.4 grams
  • Fiber: 2.3 grams

How to Grow Peach Trees

Choose the peach tree varieties that grow best in Houston, such as Gold Variety, Florida Prince, and May Pride peaches. It is spring, so now is the best time to plant peach trees. When do peaches grow? We should be able to pick the sweetest peaches in late spring and summer! Tree-ripened peaches are going to be the sweetest.

LIGHT:

Peach trees love to grow in a location with full sun exposure. Full sun exposure is at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight each day. Remember this when choosing a good spot to plant a peach tree.

watering

WATERING:

Irrigate the peach during the growing season. Follow a daily watering schedule if you use a drip irrigation system. If you are using a sprinkler system, irrigate established peach trees every three weeks. Be sure to keep the soil moist and avoid soggy soil or sitting water around the tree.

fertilizing

FERTILIZING:

Regular fertilization is recommended. During the growing season, fertilize the tree monthly, with the first fertilizer application around the start of April, when the tree blooms. Always remember to water the tree after fertilization.

pruning

PRUNING:

We recommend pruning the peach tree once it goes dormant in late fall or winter. It is a good idea to cut out any dead branches or branches that are no longer producing peaches. Remove any crowded branches and continue pruning to remove about half of the previous year’s branches.
