September is the month where lots of things start to change. The kids are settling into school after a fun summer, football parties are starting up, and the weather is starting to change for the better!

We are finally starting to come out of the hot summer and into cooler fall. As much as we are excited for cooler temperatures (and getting to wear your favorite sweatshirt again), our landscape is even more excited!

Fall is the time when our trees and plants can efficiently establish themselves in their new environment. With the changing of the season, there are a few things we need to remember so that our landscapes and gardens can thrive.

Texas Homeowners: Texas weather, especially in regions like Houston and Austin, can change quickly. Be mindful of the temperatures and rain and adjust accordingly for your yard.

Watering Your Landscape

With the cooler nights and days, it’s important to change our watering routine again. For fall, we need to water less often than we do during the hot summer. Typically, once our daytime temperatures reach 85-100 degrees, we move away from our summer watering schedule.

Multiple factors play into how much you need to water. Those factors include the type of tree or plant and the planting location. If you would like more help, don’t hesitate to reach out to one of our nursery pros at your nearest Moon Valley Nursery location.

Watering Your Lawn

Now’s a great time to help cut the amount of water we use by reducing the frequency that we water our lawns. With cooler weather, our lawns will retain more moisture longer, cutting back on our usage. So, we need to cut back on the frequency of watering, not the actual amount used when watering.

Check out our watering guide to see what we recommend for your region and your trees.

Fertilizing Your Trees and Plants

Fertilizing your trees, palms, and other plants will help them grow to their full potential through the fall and recover from any heat stress they may have endured over the summer. Now is the perfect time to give additional help with the growing process. Fertilizers allow trees and plants to intake more nutrients and water, along with making nutrients more readily available.

Moon Valley Nurseries has a line of custom-developed fertilizers that can be used on a variety of landscape materials including turf, grass, palms, desert trees, shade trees, and so much more.

Trees to Plant in the Fall

Piru Queen Palm Tree

Piru Queen 3-1

Specially bred and grown in our own farms, the Piru Queen palm is unlike any other Queen palms. Our Piru Queen palms feature thicker and harder trunks, denser and greener fronds, and produce fuller crowns than the ones you will find in other nurseries.

Our Piru Queen Palms can handle hot summers, cold winters, and windy days. The palm is supported by a rounded trunk, which makes it an ideal palm option for tight or narrow spaces around your pool. It does require overhead space as the palm grows to statuesque heights.

Shumard Oak Tree

SHUMARD OAK-1

Another impressive choice to include in your landscape for the ultimate shade is the Shumard Oak tree. This oak tree is a medium-to-large size tree and grows into a canopy with a wide-spreading reach, which creates a large area of shade all around it.

This tree is a fast-growing species of oak that is very tough and long-living, so it will be part of the family for generations! This tree is known for its traditional look with large dark green leaves that can grow up to eight inches long.

Monterrey Oak Tree

Monterrey Oak

The Monterrey Oak tree is a Texas native that features exotic green foliage and a spreading canopy that can provide plenty of dense shade for homes, parks, and commercial spaces! Some also know this oak as the Mexican Oak and Mexican White Oak tree.

If you are looking for shade, we recommend adding a specimen tree into your yard so that you can find instant relief from the hot sun. When the Monterrey Oak drops its leaves, it can let the light in during the winter and warm your home. This oak is also easy to maintain all year long and adaptable to all types of soil!
