Best Memorial Day Weekend Trees

The Vitex is a striking multi-trunk tree and is a favorite for its unique purple flowers that bloom on long spikes that form at every growth tip of the tree. The Vitex blooms during the late spring and into the summer season. The flowering spikes on the Vitex tree, like other trees on this list, are popular with our pollinating friends.

In addition to the stunning flowers, the trunk of the tree is also an interesting part of the Vitex. The twisted and tangled growth pattern gives this tree a statuesque appearance in any landscape, especially when covered in night-time lighting. This tree loves the full sun, and in the winter the leaves turn a golden yellow color.

jacaranda landscape

The Jacaranda tree is one of our best-selling flowering trees and blooming like crazy across the valley! These colorful trees have outstanding features – exotic, trumpet-shaped purple blooms and soft-feathery, fern-like foliage. These are fast-growing trees that can provide filtered shade.

We recommend to our customers that they plant them near patios, courtyards, and decks. These are stunning specimen trees that look amazing in water-wise landscapes or urban gardens because of the color they bring to those styles. They also add massive curb appeal when planted in the front yard solo or in rows.

Museum Palo Verde

The Museum Palo Verde is a beautiful shade tree for Arizona. Our Palo Verde is a hybrid of different, older Palo Verde species that bring out the best qualities from each original variety.

The unique combination resulted in a thorn-less tree with fuller foliage, large and prolific yellow flowers, and a trunk that has an eye-catching blue-green color. Between the yellow blooms and the unique trunk style, the Museum Palo Verde provides a stark contrast to just about any landscape.

This tree allows some light through the foliage throughout the day, while also supplying plenty of overall shade. This is especially beneficial when you want to add shrubs and other plant material that need partial sun under the widespread canopy of the Museum Palo Verde.

Date Palm

date palms moon valley nurseries

The Date Palm trees are the ultimate palm for your pool. These palms are also often found at resorts and shopping centers. When planted around a pool, Date Palms provide excellent shade due to their wide fronds. They are also great options for pool landscaping as they produce very minimal litter throughout the year.

Date Palms looks best when planted in clusters of three to five palms of varying heights to create a more natural style. We also recommend planting them in rows and at similar heights to create an instantaneously formal look. They can be planted almost anywhere as they are hardy to cold and heat, and drought-tolerant.

If you're looking for both shade and color, the Tipuana Tipu tree should be at the top of the list of trees to check out when you come into the nursery! The Tipu tree is one of the most popular trees we offer at Moon Valley Nurseries. It can be found all over the valley, and we are still always planting more!

The Tipu is a very fast-growing tree that has an upright-growth pattern that creates, and provides, a large area of shade for your home and yard. These trees are also drought-tolerant, once established, and can handle even the hottest summer days.

Coolest part about the Tipu? It blooms into a vibrant display of yellow flowers lasting from late spring and into early summer that contrasts beautifully with its feathery green foliage.

We have many different rose varieties that are delivered fresh from our farms, so come in and see which ones we have to offer that are looking gorgeous and are ready to plant.

May Landscape Tips for Your Best Yard

Posted by Jessica Downs on 5/3/2019

Get your yard ready in May and be prepped for summer fun

We are getting to the end of spring and the end of cool (cool-ish?) weather. While the summer is amazing for so many reasons, like pool parties and family vacations, it doesn’t change the fact that it will be painfully hot soon.

With the weather change that is about to happen in Arizona, especially the regions that will hit triple digits in a matter of weeks, homeowners should be making sure their yard is in the best shape it can be, or they better get their yard there quickly!

The healthier your yard and landscape are before summer begins, the easier it is going to be to maintain its health through the hot summer.

Our nursery pros have a few recommendations for what is best for your landscape in the month of May.

Water Your Landscape

The temperature is on the rise, and it's crucial that you keep an eye on how your trees, shrubs, and other plant material are responding to the heat. This will also help you notice any minor issues and fix them before they become a problem.

Always remember to water your trees and shrubs deep, so that it reaches the root system. Small and short watering sessions are ineffective, therefore wasting water and not supplying the plants with proper nutrients.

Long and slow watering sessions are best because you want the water to penetrate deep into the soil. Not only does this help the tree right away, but it also helps in the long-term development of the root system, and it can make a tree less susceptible to drought.

For more information on deep watering practices, click below to help you get a better idea on how to take care of your irrigation settings.

Moon Valley Watering Guide

Add Mulch

mulch in landscape moon valley nurseries

The most efficient way to keep the soil around your plants moist and cool is to apply a layer of mulch around them.

Adding a few inches of mulch will help you reduce how much water you need to use because the mulch keeps the roots cool and retains moisture for longer periods of time.

Mulch is available at any Moon Valley Nurseries location.

Control Weeds

pulling weeds from yard moon valley nurseries

You might notice that spring weeds are going away. Unfortunately, weeds are getting a second wind and growing like themselves again!  The first solution is to go out there and rip them out, root and all. Although when it is hotter and hotter, and the weeds seem to be multiplying by the hour, pulling them out by hand is no longer an option.

Pre-emergent products are the next best thing to gain control of your yard again. Moon Valley Nurseries stocks different types of pre-emergent products you will need for your weed prevention plan at our locations. Our Nursery pros will help you pick the right ones for your yard!

Give your landscape a much-needed boost of vitamins and nutrients before the summer is here. All our fertilizers have been specifically crafted for our native desert soils.

We carry fertilizers for everything on your landscape from palms, to fruit and citrus, to flowering trees. Click here to learn more about all the fertilizers that we carry at our nurseries.

Protect Your Trees

Did you know that trees can get sunburn? It’s true. Some trees are more susceptible to sunburn, but almost all of them would benefit from extra protection from the sun.

What we can do is protect the trunk of a new tree with a Protective Tree Wrap. Young trees are more vulnerable to sunburn and need protection when the temperatures rise.

We also recommend staking both new and old trees, if you feel they could be damaged in high winds. Staking is beneficial during the monsoon season in the summer.

Take Care of Your Lawn in May

This is probably the last month to enjoy being outside because that summer heat is already starting to show up! Hopefully, you have been monitoring and taking care of your lawn for the past few months, so any big issues are taken care of by now.

This is the month you want to complete any intense fertilizing to your lawn, especially if it needs nitrogen. As the temperatures rise and rise, nitrogen will be harder to use at a high dose due to its potential burn factor.

It is good to use some nitrogen-enriched fertilizer now to give your lawn a boost with its growth and development that will keep it looking great through the summer.

Planting Tips for May

planting tips for may moon valley nurseries

Our weather is taking a very hot turn soon, which means that this is the month to finish all the planting you have been planning to finish. While there are many trees and plant material that can be planted in the middle of summer, there are many that cannot!

Be sure to find out which trees, shrubs, roses, or other material you want to plant can wait to be planted and which ones should go in the ground this month.

The main reason that some plant material does best when planted now is that they can handle the current weather, which will make transplanting your material easier.

This will allow the plant to focus on regaining its strength and settling into its new location without also having to use much of its energy also to handle the heat beating down on them.

Speak to our nursery experts to know what to plant this month!

Museum Palo Verde

The Museum Palo Verde is a hybrid of different, older Palo Verde species that bring the best qualities of each tree into one. Crossing the older species created a tree that is a fuller, vibrantly yellow tree with a magical display of flowers and a brighter green, thorn-less trunk.

The Museum Palo Verde is fast becoming one of the most popular shade trees in landscapes throughout the Western United States. The multi-trunked, sculptural shapes of these trees provide a stark contrast and beautiful accent to almost any landscape.

These trees allow landscapers and homeowners to get the vibrant colors of the Palo Verde without the thorns and a heavy litter of the originals. Visit the nursery to see these trees in spectacular bloom.

Celebrate Earth Day and Transform your Yard with Moon Valley Superior Trees

Posted by Jessica Downs on 4/19/2019

One of our favorite days to celebrate and remember is Earth Day (it is April 22nd, by the way so don’t forgot to celebrate in your own way). It is like the holiday was made for us!

From the coasts of California to the Gulf of Mexico, we have been planting more trees than anybody else over the last 25 years. And we will keep planting them for years to come and growing into new territories.

Since 2010 alone, we have planted over 1.7 million trees!

Earth Day lands in a great time of year to help educate and inform people about the benefits of all the different types of trees. It is also a great time to plant trees!

With the weather we experience in early spring, our soil is warm and prepped for new trees. This helps acclimate newly transplanted trees quickly, which lessens any potential for transplant shock. The mild warm temperatures also create the perfect environment for your trees to get used to their new home and be prepared for the summer.

To celebrate Earth Day, we want to spotlight some of our favorite trees that do best when planted this time of year and that can transform your landscape in one day. Some of these are even exclusive only to Moon Valley. Keep reading to pick out your next tree!

Which Trees Will Transform My Yard this Summer?

Piru Queen Palm

PiruThe Piru Queen Palm is one of our most popular palms in Arizona. The Piru Queen was custom-made by Moon Valley Nurseries to be a stronger variety of other queen palm types. The difference is clearly obvious to Arizona residents because you guys are always asking for them!

Our Piru Queen Palms feature thicker and hardier trunks, which helps keep the entire palm stronger and healthier. The Piru Queen also has denser and greener fronds than other queen varieties, and produce fuller crowns, which helps create a more formal look and even more shade!

Moon Valley Nurseries Piru Queen Palms can handle hot summers, cold winters, and windy days. This palm is supported by a narrow trunk, which makes it ideal to plant in tight spaces. It can grow as tall as a two-story home and looks great paired with smaller palms beside it such as the Sago Palm, Pygmy Palm, and Pindo Palm.

Purple Leaf Plum

purple plum in green yard 571xThe Purple Leaf Plum tree is one of our favorite flowering trees and right now is the best time to see them at their best! This tree produces a wealth of showy pink flowers in spring but can start to bloom sooner and last longer, depending on the weather.

And the color does not end there!

This remarkable tree also features exceptional dark purple foliage. Between the flowering season it has in the beginning of the year and beautiful purple foliage in the fall, this tree is the ultimate ornamental tree.

We recommend planting them in front yards, where they are sure to attract all the right attention from neighbors. We often plant them in pairs or more to line borders, gateways, and driveway entries in a colorful style.

They can also be planted in an orchard-like row to create a stunning privacy screen. These ornamental trees can make a bold and beautiful color statement no matter how you choose to plant them!

Ficus Nitida

Ficus Nitida - MultiThe Ficus Nitida, also commonly known as the Indian Laurel, is a beautiful dense shade tree that looks amazing and can be used in almost any landscape style and match any home.

The Ficus Nitida tree can handle the most intense summer heat and even grow healthy and strong in Yuma, one of the hottest cities in the hottest state (even if it’s just a dry heat).

Because of its durability, beauty and massive amount of shade it provides, the Ficus Nitida has become our top selling tree in Arizona and other southwestern states. People are always talking about our Ficus!

Ficus columns, when planted in rows, make great hedges that are commonly used as a privacy screen. They can block unwanted views, nosy neighbors, and even flying objects - like golf balls from your friendly weekend golfer or baseballs from your young neighbors.

Multi-trunk Ficus Nitida trees provide a wide umbrella of shade. Because of their unique trunk variations, this variety adds an artistic flair and can make a great tree for the kids to climb.

Evergreen Ash

evergreen ashMany people call this the Evergreen Ash tree and others call it the Shamel tree. Regardless of what your preferred name is, we all agree that this is a beautiful tree that stands out in a landscape.

The Evergreen Ash is a favorite waterwise, fast-growing shade tree perfect for just about any landscape in Arizona. A native to Mexico, this sun-loving tree can grow up to 40-feet tall and wide in just a couple of decades.

This tree will easily grow into a large canopy that provides a generous amount of shade. Simple to grow, this Ash is generally grown in parks, commercial areas, and can be seen adorning large landscapes or planted as a large ornamental tree in medium-sized yards.

At Moon Valley Nurseries, we created a better version of the Evergreen Ash strain. Our Evergreen Ash is stronger, more reliable, and more evergreen than other strains you find elsewhere.

Crape Myrtle

crape myrtle-4The Crape Myrtle is our favorite tree to add color to a landscape and it is the number one selling flowering tree at Moon Valley Nurseries due to its ability to offer something for every season.

During the spring season, this tree really shines with its large clusters of flowers (nearly the size of a football) that bloom all over the foliage. The blooms can last a long time, sometimes even until late summer.

At Moon Valley Nurseries, we offer this tree as a single-trunk or multi-trunk. In addition, the Crape Myrtle trees grown at Moon Valley Nurseries are a top variety thanks to its optimal mildew resistance, which you will not find anywhere else.

Celebrate with Us This Weekend

Come by your nearest location and find all the trees on this list for yourself. Nothing compares to seeing them with your own eyes and standing in front of them to truly appreciate all their beauty.

Best April Landscape Tips to Keep Your Yard Healthy this Month

Posted by Jessica Downs on 3/29/2019

Not sure what to do for your landscape in April or where to get started?

Purple Leaf Plum AZ landscapeThe April landscaping chores are a lot like what you were (hopefully) doing last month, except you may have noticed more growth in your yard, good (flowers) and bad (weeds)!

If you have been keeping up with your yard as we went into spring than you are doing great! If you have not, you should definitely jump on it now and get control of your landscape.

Not only will your yard look better, it will be healthier. Spring is the time for all your trees and shrubs to be at optimal health to have a great summer growing season.

Pull Those Weeds

Unfortunately, most of us don’t have time to pull every weed that emerges from the ground, so our yards have been taken over by all different types of weeds. Some might even be getting so mature they are blooming into tiny flowers and giving you mixed feelings about ripping them out of the ground. Don’t be fooled, they are the worst!

Nobody wants to be pulling weeds in the summer with the sun beating down on them or in the dark, trying to avoid the sun. Using pre-emergent products that we carry at all nurseries will keep your yard weed-free. Be sure to ask our experts about how to use them and which product is best for your landscape.

We know it’s not fun, but it only gets worse from here!

Fun suggestion: If you have kids (or can borrow some kids), pay them a quarter for each weed they pull out (root and all).

Problem solved!

Plant! Plant! Plant!

With new seasons coming in and more focus on your landscape in the last few months, now is a great time to take a look around and see what might be missing in your yard. Look for areas that might need more shade during the day. This could be a great place to plant a tree with a large canopy. Pay attention to rooms in your home that might be hotter than other rooms. The sun is probably shining on those walls longer throughout the day. Some extra cover from trees and plants just outside the wall will make a noticeable difference!

This time of the year creates perfect conditions for planting from healthy soil that is just the right temperature to healthy trees that can handle being transplanted and adapt to their new environment at a much quicker pace.

Always be Watering

You will need to keep watching your plants and trees to know if you should adjust your watering schedules this season. The weather is constantly changing in the springtime and the temperatures can rise quickly here so you should also be checking and changing your watering schedule every few weeks.

We cannot stress how important it is to look at the temperatures. You might need to water for longer intervals soon but in just a few weeks you might also need to start watering an extra day out of the week.

When watering, allow the hose or drip system to apply the water slowly over a longer period of time. This allows the water to penetrate beneath and reach all areas of the roots. For more information, check out our watering guide.

Moon Valley Watering Guide

Feed with Fertilizer

We know we say this a lot but that should show just how important it is to fertilize and stay on top of a fertilizing schedule for all your landscape materials. Fertilizer is food for your plants. It is the difference of surviving another season malnourished or thriving in it like a champ!

Fertilize the material in your landscape to give your trees and shrubs a boost and capitalize on the prime growing season.

Moon Valley Nurseries has developed highly specialized blends of fertilizer like Super Charged Moon Juice and Super Palm Juice, which are designed to trigger and stimulate growth responses. These fertilizers also supplement the essential micro and macro nutrients that plants need to thrive in our climate.moon juice shrubs

Trim and Prune

You will want to give your trees and plants a nice trim before it gets too hot outside. Pruning not only helps develop strong crowns and branches but also promotes strong root growth.

After pruning, be sure to fertilize with Moon Juice to get much-needed nutrients into the tree. Because when you prune, you're essentially wounding the tree, so feeding it with fertilizer is a great way to make sure the tree will bounce back sooner and stronger.

Moon Valley Tree Care

Now is still the best time for tree care services for your yard. The weather is perfect for your trees to get taken care of and be strong for the summer.

Top Cold-Hardy Trees and Plants for Your Yard

Posted by Jessica Downs on 2/22/2019

While most places in the world cannot even think about planting anything until mid-late spring, Arizona is quite different. Our awesome weather gives us the opportunity to plant almost any time of the year. With the weather being colder this time of year, it’s important to make sure you are planting trees and plants that can handle that cold and still thrive. Moon Valley Nursery experts have put a list of the best hedges, shade trees, flowering trees, and palms to plant in late winter so keep reading to learn more!

Hedges are great additions to your landscape for several reasons:

  • They help to reduce noise from roads or loud neighbors,
  • They block the view of two-story homes & high-rise buildings,
  • They help reduce dust and litter from blowing into your yard,
  • Some of the larger ones can offer several feet of thick shade.

Japanese Privet

This privet is an evergreen hedge, so it keeps its beautiful appearance all year long. They are heat-tolerant and cold-hardy. They also make a great privacy screen to block unwanted views or as a wind barrier to block heavy weather conditions.

Italian Cypress

Unmistakable with their lush green foliage and tall, narrow upright form, these long living specimens are well suited for modern to Mediterranean landscape styles. Their natural ability to thrive in sunny climates on a minimal amount of water makes them a popular choice for just about any landscape. The Italian Cypress is also a clean tree that requires little maintenance upkeep!

Indian Hawthorn

If you’re looking for a smaller hedge option, check out our Indian Hawthorn shrubs. They are versatile evergreens that can handle being planted in almost any location, full sun or not, and bloom clusters of bright pink flowers in spring. They are small to medium shrubs that create a unique look when planted in rows. They are also a great choice when you are wanting to create a double hedge design in your landscape.

Shade Trees

Brazilian Pepper

Hardy and adaptable to most environments, the Brazilian Pepper tree is an attractive evergreen that is known for its compound leaves and shiny red berries. It provides year-round shade and privacy with its thick foliage and spreading canopy of branches that support its finely toothed and dark green foliage.

Live Oak

When you want to add lots of shade and beauty, you cannot go wrong with a Live Oak tree!
