roses, moon valley nurseries

We are now at the time of the year when more trees and plants are ready to be planted. Now that we are in February, it’s a great time to start planting new roses or to add more to your yard. Keep reading to learn more about our roses, how to plant them and how to care for them this month...

Why plant roses right now?

They are beautiful and fragrant, the symbol of love and romance, and a valuable and attractive addition to any landscape.  Moon Valley Nurseries grows all our own vibrant and healthy varieties. With over 150 species and thousands of cultivars available in nearly every color and a variety of shapes, you are sure to find the perfect ones at any of our nurseries.

We’ve got you covered whether you are looking for a landscape shrub for screens, hedges, and mass planting or are looking to create a charming setting with climbing/trailing varieties that can be trained to climb on pillars, fences, arbors, and gazebos- whatever your landscape needs!

Where to Plant RosesRoses-1

Roses loves the sun, so make sure you plant them in a spot in your yard that gets plenty of full sun exposure. Total sun exposure is at least six to eight hours of sun each day. Roses that do not get at least five hours of sun every day may gradually weaken. In warmer climates, we recommend growing them in a spot where they are protected from the hot afternoon sun and in an area where the roses will get decent air circulation.

Fertilizing Rosesmoon_dust-2

Regular fertilization is recommended to produce the most rewarding results. We recommend fertilizing roses with a dry slow-release fertilizer by the end of February. Check out our fertilizer products at Moon Valley Nurseries such as our All Purpose Moon Dust fertilizer and our Super Charged Moon Juice to help enhance growth.

Check out this great deal currently happening at all Moon Valley Nurseries locations! For a limited time, you can get 4 fertilizers for only $99. You can stock up on your favorite or mix and match many other fertilizer products.

Watering Roses_watering_-1

Most of our rose varieties love water and need plenty of it, but not too much! Water deeply enough to moisten the entire root system, which is about 16 to 18-inches deep but not too much that it creates sitting water. Water once a week, more during the hot seasons. It is best to check if the soil is dry within 1-3 inches of the soil to know if it needs more water.

Moon Valley Tip: Use mulch to help conserve water, reduce stress, and encourage healthy growth. We like to apply a 2 to 4-inch layer shredded leaves, dry grass clippings, or shredded bark around the base of roses.

Pruning and Weeding Roses

Annual pruning contributes to the health, longevity, and productivity. Keeping up with pruning will be a big help to your roses so they can grow properly and healthy. You should remove any of the dying or dead plant material. Remove flowers that have already died, also known as “Deadheading”.

Weeding is an important step of caring for your roses. Weeds not only make your yard look messy and uncared for, but they drop seeds as they grow so one weed can turn into many in a short time. Keep weeds away by using pre-emergent products and pulling them as soon as you see them!

February Landscape & Garden Tips

Posted by Jessica Downs on 2/1/2019

The Month of Love….ing to Work on Your Yard

It is officially February, and if you have lived in Arizona long enough you should be familiar with the fact that the “Arizona Spring” is right around the corner. The last month brought us some cold temperatures, even a few freezing nights, but the days are getting warmer as the sun stays out a bit longer each day.

There is no better time than now to start getting your landscape ready for spring. This is also the beginning of another great planting season for new additions to your yard. Taking care of your yard now with weeding, pruning, and fertilizing will ensure a healthy and full landscape for the rest of the year. Our nursery experts have shared a few tips, tasks, and ideas for your landscape this month. Continue reading below…

Weeding

With grass and plants starting to come back to life after a few cold months, it also means that weeds are going to start popping up. The sooner you can handle any weed infestation, the better. As weeds grow, they drop more seeds that will turn into their own weeds within days. We recommend taking care of them before they are even an issue. Using pre-emergents now will keep your yard free of weeds.  Keeping weeds from showing up is important so that you aren’t spending the next few months pulling weeds while the temperatures soar into triple digits!

Fertilizing

With everything in the landscape about to enter back into growing season, this is the right time to give those trees, shrubs, palms, and other plants a boost with an all-purpose fertilizer from Moon Valley Nurseries, like our SUPERCHARGED Moon Juice.

Our fertilizers are formulated to promote vigorous growth and can help your landscape recover from any stresses that may have occurred over the winter season. You can purchase our Moon Juice and other fertilizer products, such as our Landscape Soil Conditioner and Moon Royale Turf Fertilizer at all Moon Valley Nurseries locations.

We recommend using our custom blended fertilizers for your landscape needs as they are specifically formatted for Arizona soil and weather conditions.

Watering

As the temperature starts to slowly get higher, it is important to monitor your landscape for proper water usage. In the winter, cooler temperatures and less sunlight allow the soil to stay moist for a longer period of time, so watering schedules could be stretched out by a few days. Now that the sun is out longer, your soil may dry out faster, which means you will need to update your watering schedule.

MVN Watering Guide!

Good Rule of Thumb: Check the soil up to 3 inches deep. If it is dry, then it is time to water.

Planting

Luckily, we live in an area where it is planting season all year, depending on what you indent to plant! Winter is often a slower time of year for landscapes as most things go dormant. Over this time, many homeowners start to think about how to improve their yard.

Those landscape plans you have been saving for the spring can finally become a reality. Planting just before spring season is ideal because it will give your trees and shrubs plenty of time to establish their root system before the spring and summer months!

What to Plant before Spring Arrives

Brazilian Pepperbrazilian pepper

This vibrant evergreen is certain to give any landscape year-round attractiveness. The silky, dark green leaves create a wide-spread awning that creates an abundance of shade. This is a perfect choice for the Arizona desert environment due to its love of heat and its drought tolerance. Available in both single or multi-trunk varieties, Brazilian Pepper trees are water-wise and require little water once established.  The Brazilian Pepper tree attracts butterflies and hummingbirds looking for a snack, so sit back in the shade of your Brazilian Pepper and appreciate these incredible visitors.

Ficus Columnsficus columns-2

Indian Laurel Columns are an excellent choice for creating a living wall no matter the reason. Need privacy or shade? Look no further. These drought-tolerant Ficus Columns have dense evergreen foliage that works well for blocking unwanted sights and sounds as well keeping your yard and home cooler, thanks to these fast-growing trees. They are easy to prune, so you can keep them on the smaller side for topiary purposes or tall and majestic – whichever fits your style and landscape needs. Grown to thrive in desert environments, Ficus Nitida Columns are sure to add greenery to our arid Arizona landscapes and get attention from your neighbors.

Queen Palmqueen palms-2

Specially grown at our tree farms, the Piru Queen Palm is unlike other Queen Palms around. Our Piru Queen Palms feature thicker and hardier trunks, denser and greener fronds, and produce fuller crowns. Our Queen Palms can handle hot summers, cold winters, and windy days. The palm is supported by a thick trunk which makes it ideal in tight spaces around your pool, but it does require overhead space as the palm grows to statuesque heights.

Date Palmdate palms-1

These palms will create a luxurious feel to any property! Not only do they look great, but they are able to handle any weather conditions without any problem. Around pools, the Date Palm provides excellent shade due to its wide large umbrella-shape, fronds and extremely minimal litter. The Date Palm looks great when planted in clusters of 3 to 5 palms and is hardy to cold, heat and drought tolerant. Date palms will add a resort-style feel wherever they are planted!

Majestic Ashmajestic ash-3

This Majestic Ash tree is an evergreen seedless variety that stays greener than other ash varieties. They feature large, glossy green leaves and its narrow, upright shape makes it an ideal shade tree for any potential planting locations. Because these trees are low-maintenance and virtually pest-free, it makes them ideal for a yard or street plantings.  If you are expecting and hoping for a large canopy of shade to provide a play area for your children or for a way to escape the afternoon sun you will not be disappointed in the Majestic Ash.

Top 3 Reasons to Plant Fast-Growing Trees

Posted by Jessica Downs on 1/25/2019

What is the benefit of planting fast-growers?

1. Shade

When planted around your home, trees can create a completely different environment than what you would have without them. Not only do trees around your home add massive shade to parts of your landscape, they can make the temperature drop and give you a cooler experience than your neighbor just right across the street. They can even keep the interior of your home cooler, which means less strain on your A/C unit.

2. Privacy

Many people add new foliage to their yard because they want to create a bit of privacy from the world around them. Trees are often planted as an alternative to privacy hedges or hedge walls. They not only stop people from seeing into your property, but their thicker canopy and extra height allows the tree to block out unwanted noises such as traffic or parks nearby. We especially recommend fast-growing trees in the backyard to block nearby windows for ultimate privacy!

3. Property Value

Unless you are flipping a home or just ready to sell yours, property value is usually not the primary reason our customers want to add but it is ALWAYS a nice perk to realize how much value you are adding to your home. By adding to your landscape, and adding shade and privacy, the value of your home could go up by as much as 28%. Depending on how much you invest in your yard, you could be getting it all back in due time.

Best 5 Fast-Growing Trees to Plant Now

LIVE OAK tree az

Live Oak

This shade tree creates a classic landscape that the whole family will enjoy over the years. Live Oak trees have dense, dark green foliage that creates a large crown that spreads wide around the dark trunk. These trees are extremely drought tolerant and require low water intake, perfect for our warm, sometimes scorching, climate. The Live Oak is a great choice for planting because of its performance in the hot summer months and its ability to grow in tough soil conditions. It has a wide canopy of dark green leaves and when planted in rows it can give your landscape a privacy wall or shade barrier that provides immense overall protection.

ficus nitida

Ficus Nitida

The Ficus Nitida is definitely one of our most popular trees that we notice our customers looking for when they come down to a nursery. It’s also one of our most popular trees that we deliver and plant all over Arizona. The Ficus Nitida thrives in full sun exposure, but can grow in partial shade, and is drought tolerant. Since this is a fast-growing evergreen, you can enjoy more shade without the long wait. The foliage on this striking tree grows into a dense canopy that provides generous amounts of shade inside and outside of the home, when planted strategically.

Tiputipu tree

This semi-evergreen tree with a fun name is quickly becoming a favorite throughout Arizona. In fact, the Tipuana tipu is famous for its high-spreading canopy and attractive foliage that provides ample shade. Don’t let the hot sun keep you from enjoying your yard. Yes, if it is shade coverage you are after, there is no better tree than the Tipu. When talking about this tree, we must mention its feathery, bluish-green foliage. The foliage is not the only lovely feature. This fast-growing, colorful flowering tree puts on a show when the golden-colored blooms arrive in late spring and last to early summer. Be ready for the local butterflies that will definitely come by for a visit.

MAJESTIC ash tree

Majestic Ash

The Majestic Ash tree is an evergreen shade tree and Arizona will always need some of that around! This tree is low-maintenance and nearly pest-free, which makes it an ideal choice for planting in a yard or street plantings. You can plant the Majestic Ash as a main focal point in your yard or in a row to create long stretches of shade on your property. A row of these trees will also give your yard additional privacy. The classic, larger-leaved green foliage compliments the canopy with its dense and unique growth. This Majestic Ash tree originates from just south of us, in Mexico. As it is not too far from home, these ash trees do great in our climate.

oleander

Oleander

The Oleander tree loves the hot summer months, which makes them an ideal tree for your Arizona landscape. The Oleander tree displays a long-lasting bloom that comes in the form of red, white, and pink clusters. The blooms are vibrant and may extend into the winter months. Ideally planted in groups or rows, the Oleander is a great tree for our customers who are seeking to build privacy hedges, area screens, or a property border. Because of the trees ability to keep a thick coat of dark green leaves, and splashes of color that appear for many months out of the year, this is a perfect choice when you are looking for a “living wall” for your landscape.

Using Pre-Emergents to Control Weeds in Your Yard

Posted by Jessica Downs on 1/25/2019

Lawn

Apply Pre-Emergent Herbicides

Pre-emergent herbicide works by putting a chemical barrier down, in granular or liquid form, over the top of the soil. This will stop the weeds from germinating above the soil line. To reduce the number of weeds or eliminate them completely, a pre-emergent should be applied at least twice a year. We recommend applying in the beginning of spring and fall.

Applying a pre-emergent herbicide is an easy way to spend less time working in your yard and more time enjoying it! Keeping your weeds in control not only ensures an attractive landscape but creates a much healthier environment for the rest of your plants and gardens.

AMAZE Grass & Weed PreventerAMAZE weed prevent

Recommended as our top choice for granular grass & weed prevention. It's easy to apply and extremely effective against the common unwanted weeds and grasses in Southwestern gardens. Easy-to-follow instructions are found on the bag.

Weed Impede - RTUImpede RTU

This RTU (Ready-to-use) herbicide is a pre-mixed concentrate that can be applied straight from the bottle through the attached nozzle. Weed Impede is our top choice for liquid herbicides, as they work great against common weeds and grasses.

Weed Impede Concentrateimpede concentrate

This is the concentrated form of the Weed Impede RTU - this contains a full-strength concentrate. So, while it's not ready to use right out of the bottle, you will get a more potent concentration of herbicide. We recommend the concentrated form for large yards with a massive weeds issue.

Weed Impede 2 in 1weed 2 in 1

Unlike other pre-emergent, this not only kills existing weeds, it prevents new ones from forming for up to 6 months. This means you can apply this product before having to pull out the weeds yourself and is by far the easiest solution to weed control.

Remove Existing Weedsweeds_orig-1

Every second you let a weed stay in your yard, is a second that more seeds could be falling into the ground, ready to become its own weed and take up more space in your yard. So, what’s the best way to gain control of your landscape? Spray regularly at peak growing times to be pro-active against the infestation.

This is never how you want to spend a weekend morning (or the full weekend, depending on how many weeds have crept in). However, it does need to get done and the sooner you do it the better. Each day allows the weeds root system to grow deeper and stronger, while the flowers have more time to pollinate and spread EVEN MORE weeds around the yard.

All you need is a pair of gloves, a bin/bucket for all the weeds you pull, some knee pads/towel to give your knees a bit of protection, and, if you ask nicely, a friend to help you out!  Remember to remove the entire root from the ground. For additional assistance, a hoe or shovel can help remove the roots that have gone deep enough to withstand being pulled by hand.

Additional Ways to Keep Weeds Far, Far Away

Mulching

Weeds, like every other plant, need sunlight to survive. The mulch acts as a barrier to keep the weeds seeds from getting any sunlight, essentially smothering them. If using mulch to suppress weed growth, be sure that the mulch is at least 2 inches deep. Replenish the mulch, as needed. For added protection, cover the ground with newspaper or cardboard before adding the mulch.

Close Planting

Close planting is exactly what it sounds like - It’s the concept of planting shrubs, ground cover, or grass materials close to each other. Some people enjoy close planting due to the overall aesthetic. This is also a great way to keep weeds from growing since they will not have the space or sunlight to succeed.

Weed prevention with pre-emergent herbicides will keep your landscape looking healthy and beautiful and may inspire you to plant more things that can add more beauty to your landscape! Visit your nearest Moon Valley Nurseries location. We have got you covered for all your landscape needs!

January Tips to Care for Your Roses

Posted by Jessica Downs on 1/22/2019

What a Lovely Thing a Rose is...

...And with the weather changing yet again, it is time to see how well our roses survived the winter and help them get back to prime shape for the fullest blooms in 2019! At Moon Valley Nurseries, we support our roses-loving community in Arizona and make sure to always have the best, and most variety of, roses. Now is the time to start getting ready to plant new roses and getting your existing roses ready to start producing in abundance any time now!

January Rose Care Guide

Pruning

Make sure to prune all the roses back about one half of its current growth and remove foliage. Clean up all debris, including leaves and petals and discard them in the trash. If you have roses that are the climbing variety, pruning will not be needed.

Watering

While this might vary depending on what type of weather we are experiencing this month, we recommend deep watering your roses at least once a week. Continue to monitor the temperature and pay attention to your plants.

Weeding

Examine the area where your roses are planted, or will be planted, to make sure there are no weeds around the roses. Remove all weeds that you can see, no matter how small they might be.

Planting

Because we live in a warmer region than the rest of the country, we can start planting roses as early as January. Be sure to keep newly planted roses moist while they are transitioning into their new location.

Best Hedges to Plant in the Winter

Posted by Jessica Downs on 1/18/2019

Hedges are very popular and there are several different types of bushes and trees that can be used to create a beautiful hedge. Hedges are useful for several reasons:

  • They help reduce noise from roads or loud neighbors
  • They block the view of two story homes & high-rise buildings
  • They help reduce dust and litter from blowing into your yard
  • The larger ones can offer several feet of thick shade
  • They block harsh weather and can be used as a windbreaker

Below is a list of 5 types of trees and shrubs that make great options when you are wanting to set up a hedge in your yard. These plants have also been chosen by their durability with winter planting. Keep reading and see which hedge/hedges are best for your designs!

Hopseedhopseed, moon valley nurseries, landscape design, tree nursery, arizona, hedges

The Hopseed bush is a great addition for any Arizona yard. While it may not be what you think of when you are considering a plant for hedge material, it does the job perfectly. It also adds some unique texture and different look to your yard than a traditional hedge. At Moon Valley Nurseries, we offer both the Green Hopseed and the Purple Hopseed bush, which gives you different options depending on your landscaping needs. Both the Green and Purple Hopseed are quite similar except for one difference that you have probably already noticed – They are different colors.

When creating a privacy hedge, both Hopseed varieties will add a unique wall of color that contrasts well with surrounding foliage or when planted together. These fast-growing shrubs grow upright, which makes them easy to install in almost any location.

Carolina Cherrycarolina cherry, moon valley nurseries, landscape design, tree nursery, arizona, hedges

The Carolina Cherry has become a popular attractive tree for many homeowners in our desert region. The Carolina Cherry has a natural upright cone-like shape and its malleability to being trimmed makes it a great plant for hedges, short or tall. This tree can be pruned into other shapes as well and can handle topiary pruning. It is drought and heat tolerant, and requires minimal watering once established.

Its foliage is dark green, and it blooms small, creamy white flowers in the spring. The dense foliage and tall growth potential makes it perfect to block out everything from harsh weather and neighbors that are just too close. They can be easily sheared into a tall screen or sound barrier which make them a near-perfect option for many homes.

Oleanderoleander, moon valley nurseries, landscape design, tree nursery, arizona, hedges

A hedge of Oleanders will surely create an exciting view for you and your neighbors. They grow great in Arizona and can grow anywhere from as short as 3 feet to as tall as 20 feet, depending on which variety you plant and what type of hedge you want for your yard. Oleanders are extremely tough and can recover from almost anything the elements throw at them. These shrubs love the hot summer months, which makes them an ideal flowering option for your Arizona landscape.

The Oleander shrub displays a long-lasting bloom that comes in clumps of red, white, and pink. The blooms are lively and can extend into the cooler winter months. Preferably planted in groups or rows, the Oleander is a great tree for homeowners who are seeking privacy hedges, area screens, and property borders because of the trees ability to grow and maintain a thick coat of dark green leaves throughout the year.

Lemon Bottle Brushlemon bottlebrush, moon valley nurseries, landscape design, tree nursery, arizona, hedges

It is easy to see why Lemon Bottle Brush plants are often used as hedges throughout the Valley. With our natural landscape being mountain and desert color shades, the pop of red that comes from this plant makes any yard more interesting! They can bloom showy bottlebrush-like flower spikes that will paint a landscape with colors of bright red from the flowers and dark green from the foliage.

The Bottlebrush not only adds a splash of color to our desert environment, they attract hummingbirds and butterflies, too. These evergreen shrubs are a great way to create a colorful privacy screen when several are lined up along a property border. A great hedge design idea for the Bottlebrush shrub is to create small hedges around a backyard garden or a focal point in the front yard. The Bottlebrush blooms in spring with some off-season blooms in the fall.

Italian CypressITALIAN CYPRESS, moon valley nurseries, landscape design, tree nursery, arizona, hedges

Native to the Mediterranean area, the Italian Cypress is well-known and often found in hedge form announcing formal entrances, borders and backdrops for impressive properties all over the world. Unmistakable with their lush green foliage and tall, narrow upright form, these long-living specimens of magnificence are well suited for modern living and vintage Mediterranean design styles.

Their natural ability to thrive in sunny climates on a minimal amount of water makes them a popular choice for just about any landscape. We recommend these often for two-story homes as they grow tall and can block views from other homes nearby and give you a more relaxing view from your property.

Get a New Yard with New Trees for the New Year

We love planting trees all year long, no matter what time of the year it might be! It doesn’t hurt that we live in an amazing part of the country that lets us plant and care for our landscapes, even in the winter months! Along with the great weather, we also grow our own trees and palm trees, so we get to pamper them from the moment we plant the seedling on our farm to the day we plant the tree in your yard. Our trees and palms are always at optimal health and ready to be planted even during the colder months (“colder” for Arizona). Below is a list of what we consider the best cold-hardy trees to plant during the winter season. Check it out….

Also known as the Canary Island Date Palm, it is characterized by its dense canopy of dark green fronds, a stout trunk, and a pineapple-like crown – where the name Pineapple Palm came from. The distinct diamond pattern on the trunk lends to its regal look. This low maintenance and slow growing palm loves full sun exposure and warm climates, just like what we have in Arizona! When planted in groups, this palm provides a nice shady spot. No matter the size you get, this palm is sure to bring a grand presence to any landscape. Pineapple Palms will add long-lasting character to any landscape.

Mediterranean Fan PalmMED FAN-1

The Mediterranean Fan Palm features blue-gray, fan-shaped fronds with unique multi-trunks– making it one of the best landscape palms for landscape lighting! This palm is considered the hardiest of all palms. It is a low maintenance palm that requires very little cleanup through the year. We like to use Mediterranean Fan Palms underneath larger palms to add more texture and foliage, around swimming pools, or as a tropical barrier hedge on landscape borders. These palms also do amazingly well in containers, which would add flare into a small yard or patio garden. A Mediterranean Fan Palm is a must-have for anyone with a tropical or Mediterranean style yard!

This vibrant evergreen is sure to give any landscape year-round beauty. Available in both single or multi-trunk, Brazilian Pepper trees are water-wise and require little water once established. The glossy, dark green leaves create a wide spreading canopy that produces an abundance of shade. A perfect choice for Southwest environments due to its love of heat and its drought tolerance. During winter, bright red berries appear that are commonly used as holiday decorations. As a bonus, the Brazilian Pepper tree can attract butterflies, so sit back in the shade and appreciate the wondrous site.

Jump into the New Year with a New Yard

Posted by Jessica Downs on 1/4/2019

NEW YEAR, NEW YARD

Starting a new year is amazing and comes with all the possibilities of what it can bring for you, your family, your friends, and even your yard. We love to start out the new year ready to help you reach your landscaping goals for this year. You might want to completely re-design your yard to entertain more, to let kids and pets run around, or to have a quiet relaxing space for yourself. Whatever your reasons may be, we are here for you!

We recommend starting any landscaping projects now so that you will be done and ready by the time the weather gets warmer. Now is also a great time for your landscape design project because we are currently offering 50% OFF ALL SPECIMEN TREES, while supplies last. Not only will you save more on trees, you will get fully matured trees from the moment they are planted. That means there is another perk to your landscape makeover – a high home value increase thanks to your new manicured yard!

LANDSCAPE DESIGN THEME IDEAS

When you are considering starting a new design, or re-designing, project, it’s good to have an idea of the type of theme you want to achieve for your yard. Figuring out this one aspect could help the rest of the planning come together really fast!

Based on whether you want a Tropical, Classical, or a Mediterranean style to your yard tells us which plants, trees, flowers, and general design layout you might be interested in and lets us narrow down your options for you!

Tropical Styletropical 1-1

This type of design is easily recognizable based off its signature look. That look includes adding tropical plants and trees with bright green leaves and strong accents of colors throughout the landscape. For a tropical vibe, we recommend different varieties of palms, Hibiscus, Bird of Paradise, and more.

This style is meant to mimic the tropical paradises of the Hawaiian Islands, Belize, or Fiji. It will instantly take you to a relaxing oasis. All you have to do is sit back and enjoy, listen to the wind go through the palm leaves, and transport yourself to your own personal oasis. Add this landscape theme around your pool and it will feel like your private little island.

Mediterranean Stylemed 1-1

Some people might not find the tropical setting as relaxing as others and that’s okay. There are plenty of ways to design a yard! Another popular design we are often asked about during the design process is the Mediterranean style. This theme is often wanted for the low-key sophistication that it brings to the environment. For this style, we always suggest planting hedge materials, Italian Cypress, Bougainvillea, Mediterranean Fan Palms, and Olive trees.

This style has become popular with the fans of old European landscape, specifically in the Italian, French, and Spanish country and coastal towns. These yards were designed on the goal to spend more time outside, whether enjoying the yard and gardening or spending time with family and friends outside.

Classic Style

classic-1

This style is the more traditional option that has become more and more popular through the years. As a home owner, sometimes you must think about the long-term effect of how it will help or hinder your chances of selling your home later depending on the landscape style you choose. This is a style that seems to be enjoyed by most people.

The design is so simple and yet each yard with a classic theme can still look so unique. The classic style is impressive because of how balanced the yards are with trees and plants spread out evenly through the yard in a pattern-like setting. We love to plant different varieties of hedges in a classic yard to give a formal linear look and different color roses for pops of color.

Moon Valley Design Process

Design-2

With expert designers at every store, we are ready to help all our customers with any questions they have about landscape designing and everything that comes with it. Moon Valley Nurseries is the only place around that offers a full design service from planning your design layout to planting your trees and plants into your yard.

Consultations allow us to see what exactly our clients want for their new yard. We want to get to know you and understand how you use your yard or how you want to start using it this year, how long you plan on staying at your home, and so on. Depending on all these factors and more, we can start to suggest and design a yard that will fit your exact needs.

At-Home Consultation

We are proud to be able to offer an at-home consultation for our clients. The design experience is personal and different when we can come to your home and see the actual land that you want to update with our own eyes. One of our professional designers will come to your home and walk your property with you.

They will consider factors like how the sun hits your home throughout the day, which way your home faces, slopes or uneven ground, and will be able to make the best suggestions for your yard based on those factors. They will also be able to show you the best places in your yard to plant the trees and plants that you are interested in adding to your landscape.

In-Store Consultation

No matter which Moon Valley Nurseries you decide to visit, you will find an expert designer happy to help you with all your design questions. For in-store consultations, we recommend bringing in photos of your yard for us to see. We can even check out your property though programs like Google Earth, which helps us get a general idea of the size of your yard.

Once we discuss the type of yard you are looking to create, you and your designer can walk around the nursery and start tagging the trees and plants to be included into your yard. Once you have chosen what you want, we will set up a delivery time and get you one step closer to your new yard!

Tree Care Warranty

When you buy trees from us, you have the option to get an extended warranty with your purchases! This warranty lasts for a whole year starting from the day your tree is planted and comes with proper staking of your tree, as needed. The warranty covers issues such as frost, wind, heat stress, and other weather-related damage. If the damage is too bad to fix, we will even replace your tree with a new tree of similar size.

January Landscape and Garden Tips

Posted by Jessica Downs on 1/4/2019

Make any Landscaping or Gardening Resolutions?

If you’re thinking that you want to be outside more and try new things with your yard, you have come to the right place. We love hearing about new projects, seeing finished yard installations, and helping create designs for our customers that last them a lifetime.

With the new year here, it’s time to start thinking about your yard. Should you add some new plants to the back? Or redesign a section? Or get a whole yard makeover?

Watering Tips

With the low temperatures this time of year, it is good for homeowners to be diligent about how much water plants are receiving and how often. During the colder months, it’s best to water in the morning so that the water has time to absorb into the soil throughout the day. You will still want to water the same amount for each watering session. You just don’t need to water as often!

Fertilizing Tips

Using the proper fertilizer during this crucial time ensures that your landscape is regaining all necessary nutrients. Your landscape is getting a nice break from the heat now, but it needs a bit of extra attention during the cold weather. Take note of your plants, trees, and lawn to determine if they need light fertilizing to get them through the winter. The better care they receive now, the quicker they will bounce back when spring is here again.

SuperCharged Moon Juicemoon juice shrubs

Our nursery experts recommend using SuperCharged Moon Juice prior to the cold weather hitting your yard. Moon Juice helps accelerate moisture intake along with providing vital nutrients that plants might be losing because of the cold. This will help protect your trees and plants from the freezing temperatures and give them a jump start when spring arrives.

Tree Care Tips

The winter season is a good time to trim off any dead or damaged branches that may have suffered from cold damage. Make sure to also cut back any excessive branches and sucker branches so that the tree is getting optimal sunlight and warmth.

Best Citrus Trees for Winter Planting

Everyone loves the feeling of growing their own food and Arizona is a great place to grow nearly anything and everything for your dinner table. Citrus trees are a popular addition to your yard and they produce fresh fruit throughout the year. Below are some of our favorite that do best when planted this time of year.

Orange orange-3

Orange trees are one of the most popular citrus trees to grow in the southwest region. There might even be neighborhoods around you named after the old orange farms that existed, or still exist, in that area. Our weather conditions make for the perfect growing environments for this citrus tree. Some of the best varieties to grow in our region are Navel, Sweet, Tangerine, and Tangelo oranges – all delicious!

Lemon

650x650-Lemon

Lemons are one citrus variety that can be considered ever-bearing as they often produce two crops per year. Meyer lemons are a favorite due to their many culinary uses and their thin rind that makes squeezing the freshest lemon juice a breeze! Some other great varieties to plant are Lisbon and Eureka lemons.

Lemon trees need a lot of sun, so they do best when planted somewhere that lets them have full sun exposure through the year and they can adapt to most types of soil, so the focus is making sure they get sun on them!

Grapefruit

Grapefruit (2)

Red Grapefruits are another tree that can be planted to increase the length of time you can harvest fresh citrus from your yard. These fruits are typically ready January through May and are again ready for harvest later in the year.

The most popular types of grapefruits to plant and grow are the Red and White varieties. Grapefruit trees can be fast growers with the perfect combination of rich soil and full sunlight. Some can even grow up to 24 inches in a year depending on the type of tree.

Protecting Your Landscape from Freezing Winter Temperatures

Posted by Jessica Downs on 1/2/2019

Don’t Let your Shrubs Fall Victim to the Frost

After a very enjoyable fall and early winter, the weather forecast for the upcoming weeks in the Valley is calling for some very cold nights. In fact, we are already beginning to see some frost and very cold temperatures in areas around town. After your trees and plants have thrived throughout the fall season it is important to take the proper steps to protect and care for them, so they will be healthy once spring shows up and reach their full potential.

We receive many questions from our customers regarding tree and plant protection and about what should and shouldn’t be covered, when it should be covered, for how long, what to cover it with, and if there are other protective steps you can take to protect your landscape. Our Nursery Professionals and Tree Care team have provided us with some great tips and protective measures to ensure everything in your yard makes it through these next few weeks.

Susceptible Plants

The first step is figuring out which plants and trees are going to need protection, and how much protection they will need to survive. The most common plants damaged by cold weather are tropical varieties that are not used to temperatures that fall below 35 degrees. (Based on this logic, us Arizona natives are probably at a high risk for frost damage too so bundle up!)

Plants and shrub materials such as Bougainvillea’s, Lantana, Hibiscus, Tropical Bird of Paradise, Boxwood Beauties and younger Citrus trees are some of the more common landscape items that are affected by the cold weather. If you don’t know the types of plants you have, take some photos and bring them down to the nursery so we can help you figure out which ones might need extra protection this winter.

Water and Super Charged Moon JuiceMoon Juice and Bedding (8)

One of the easiest ways to prep your plants for a cold night is to water them heavily the night before a freeze. Once covered this will create humidity, which means that the air will retain a little more warmth than dry air. Coupled with our protective blanket you can create a small micro climate for your landscape that will provide even more protection.

Our experts also recommend using SuperCharged Moon Juice prior to the cold weather hitting your yard. Moon Juice helps accelerate moisture intake along with providing vital nutrients that plants might be losing because of the cold. This will help protect your trees and plants from the cold weather and give them a jump start when spring arrives.

Heat Lighting

You can also use incandescent lighting (older warming bulbs) to help protect trees from frost damage. Focusing the light onto the tree will create heat that will stop frost from forming on the tree. Unfortunately, incandescent bulbs are becoming harder to find but they are other options such as infrared heat lamps.

Covering Trees and Plants

Cover your planfrost clothts before sundown and make sure to secure the covering against wind that might rip it off the plant during the night.  When covering your plants our experts recommend using our Plant Protecting Blanket, which can be found at all our Moon Valley Nursery locations. The Plant Protecting Blanket has been designed to be lighter, yet provide better protection, than traditional materials used for landscape fabric. This cloth blanket helps insulate your trees and plants and retain heat and moisture. At the same time, it will help retain heat coming from the soil.

Burlap or cloth materials can also be used, but never use plastic as a cover for any plants or trees.  Leave your plants covered until the sun has risen and temperatures are above freezing. Repeat this process daily during freezing temperatures.

And one more time for safe measure - DO NOT USE PLASTIC AS A COVER.

Frost Supplies

chemicals

Moon Valley carries all the material and supplies you need to help protect everything in your yard. From ready-to-use Cloud Cover to bulk Plant Protection Blankets that can be cut to order, we have you covered. Call our tree care team today with any questions you might have or bring in photos of your plants to the nursery, so we can make sure you have everything you need to protect your plants this year.

We don’t always get below freezing temperatures, but when we do, Moon Valley Nurseries is ready and here for you. Knowing what to do during these few weeks of super cold nights will keep your landscape looking great throughout the winter, keep it healthy, and ready for the spring!
